Food safety is key to achieving several of the Sustainable Development Goals and World Food Safety Day brings it into the spotlight, to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks. About 600 million cases of foodborne diseases occur annually worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Safe food contributes to economic prosperity, boosting agriculture, market access, tourism, and sustainable development. It has become an impending concern which can be resolved only when international bodies, governments, producers, and consumers consider it a shared responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>The success of the first celebration in 2019, is really an inspiration for WHO and FAO to celebrate this year too the WFSD and reinforces the call to strengthen the commitment to scale up food safety.\u00a0 The United Nations (UN) has assigned two of its agencies, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to lead efforts in bettering food safety around the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/entri.app\/blog\/top-current-affairs-for-ssc-rrb-bank-psc-2020-september-28-to-october-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Weekly Current Affairs Notes.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The UN has developed a guide to discuss why food safety is necessary and how it could be achieved. The guide has\u00a0five key points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Governments must ensure\u00a0safe and nutritious food for all.<\/li>\n<li>Agriculture and food producers\u00a0need to adopt good practices.<\/li>\n<li>Business operators\u00a0must make sure food is safe.<\/li>\n<li>All consumers have a right to safe, healthy, and nutritious food.<\/li>\n<li>Food safety is a\u00a0shared responsibility.<\/li>\n<li>Safe, nutritious, and sufficient food is key to promoting health and ending hunger, which is two of the main aims of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/entri.app\/blog\/nobel-prize-physics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nobel Prize Winners-Physics.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Food Safety Index (SFSI)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>FSSAI has developed the first State Food Safety Index (SFSI) to measure the performance of States on five parameters of food safety. The categories include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Human Resources and Institutional Arrangements<\/li>\n<li>Compliance<\/li>\n<li>Food Testing- Infrastructure and Surveillance<\/li>\n<li>Training and Capacity Building<\/li>\n<li>Consumer Empowerment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A new-age, hand-held battery-operated device called \u2018Raman 1.0\u2019 to perform rapid detection (in less than 1 minute) of economically driven adulteration in edible oils, fats, and ghee. An innovative solution to take food safety to schools called the \u2018Food Safety Magic Box\u2019. This do-it-yourself food testing kit comprises a manual and equipment to check for food adulterants, which school children can use in their classroom laboratories. Foodborne diseases are preventable.<\/li>\n<li>Goal 12 \u2014 When countries strengthen their regulatory, scientific, and technological capacities to ensure that food is safe and of the expected quality throughout the food chain, they move towards more sustainable patterns of food production and consumption.<\/li>\n<li>Goal 17 \u2014 A globalized world with annual food exports currently in excess of USD 1.6 trillion and complex food systems demands international cooperation across sectors to ensure food is safe.
