He stepped back from congress and joined Janata party and became the first non-congress prime minister of India. he is the oldest prime minister of India to hold the office at the age of 81 years. After India conducted the nuclear test in 1974 at the time Indra Gandhi in Pokhran, he tried his level best to maintain the peace level between the countries like Pakistan and China.
