It is presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an author for their \u2018outstanding contribution towards literature. The awards were instituted in 1961 and are bestowed only on Indian writers writing in Indian languages.<\/p>\n<p>The first recipient of the award was the Malayalam writer G. Sankara Kurup, in 1965 for his collection of poems, Odakkuzhal.
