Historians suspect that if Galileo took part in such a grand spectacle, there would be more documentation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"tagStyle_1saq61g-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_erf7gxd57\"><strong>Galileo taught his students how to cast horoscopes.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_e4i5psets\">It\u2019s awkward to think of the father of modern science mucking about with astrology<\/li>\n<li>But we should keep two things in mind:\n<ul>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_e4i5psets\">First, as historians remind us, it\u2019s problematic to judge past events by today\u2019s standards.<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_e4i5psets\">In Galileo\u2019s time, astrology was only just beginning to disentangle from astronomy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Besides, Galileo wasn\u2019t rich: A professor who could teach astrological methods would be in greater demand than one who couldn\u2019t.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"tagStyle_1saq61g-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_u4lr61f2e\"><strong>Galileo didn&#8217;t like being told what to do.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_ushzenkhn\">Based on his eventual kerfuffle with the Roman Catholic Church, even as a young professor at the University of Pisa, Galileo had a reputation for rocking the boat<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_ushzenkhn\">The university\u2019s rules demanded that he wear his formal robes at all times. He refused\u2014he thought it was pretentious and considered the bulky gown a nuisance. So the university docked his pay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"tagStyle_1saq61g-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_8bq0k1oc6\"><strong>Galileo Galilei didn&#8217;t invent the telescope.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_xndkwyzh2\">We\u2019re not sure who did, although a Dutch spectacle-maker named Hans Lipperhey often gets the credit (he applied for a patent in the fall of 1608)<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_xndkwyzh2\">Within a year, Galileo Galilei obtained one of these Dutch instruments and quickly improved the design. Soon, he had a telescope that could magnify 20 or even 30 times<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_xndkwyzh2\">As historian of science Owen Gingerich put it, Galileo managed \u201cto turn a popular carnival toy into a scientific instrument.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"tagStyle_1saq61g-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_fa820so3j\"><strong>A king leaned on Galileo to name planets after him.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_g5apor723\">Galileo rose to fame in 1610 after discovering, among other things, that the planet\u00a0Jupiter\u00a0is accompanied by four little\u00a0moons, never previously observed (and invisible without telescopic aid)<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_g5apor723\">Galileo dubbed them the \u201cMedicean stars\u201d after his patron, Cosimo II of the Medici family, who ruled over Tuscany<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_g5apor723\">The news spread quickly; soon the king of France was asking Galileo if he might discover some more worlds and name them after him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"tagStyle_1saq61g-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_72ytbrwhe\"><strong>Galileo and the church issue.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_p2oenqy9w\">In fact, the Vatican was keen on acquiring astronomical knowledge, because such data was important for working out the dates of Easter and other holidays<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_p2oenqy9w\">In 1611, when Galileo visited Rome to show off his telescope to the Jesuit astronomers there, he was welcomed with open arms. The future Pope Urban VIII had one of Galileo\u2019s essays read to him over dinner and even wrote a poem in praise of the scientist<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_p2oenqy9w\">It was only later, when a few disgruntled conservative professors began to speak out against Galileo, that things started to go downhill<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_p2oenqy9w\">It got even worse in 1616, when the Vatican officially denounced the heliocentric (sun-centered) system described by Copernicus, which all of Galileo\u2019s observations seemed to support<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_p2oenqy9w\">The problem wasn\u2019t Copernicanism. More vexing was the notion of a moving <a class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_1i5d9um\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/647722\/earth-facts\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a>, which seemed to contradict certain verses in the Bible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"tagStyle_1saq61g-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_ugm0f0rh6\"><strong>Galileo probably could have earned a living as an artist.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_y8pw0qekq\">Galileo as a scientist, but his interests\u2014and talents\u2014straddled several disciplines<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_y8pw0qekq\">Galileo could draw and paint as well as many of his countrymen and was a master of perspective\u2014a skill that no doubt helped him interpret the sights revealed by his telescope<\/li>\n<li class=\"tagStyle_18h2erd-o_O-style_a7x3hw-o_O-style_48hmcm-o_O-style_1eq89f5\" data-mm-id=\"_y8pw0qekq\">His drawings of the moon are particularly striking.
