Its parent organization works<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as a subsidiary organ<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> under the United Nations general assembly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The organization was created in 1969, the same year the United Nations General Assembly declared \u201cparents have the exclusive right to determine freely and responsibly the number and spacing of their children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UNFPA stands for United Nations Fund for Population Activities. It also works to develop context-specific knowledge and capacity on population and reproductive health issues. The mandate of UNFPA is established by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UNFPA works directly to tackle Sustainable Development Goal 3 on health, Goal 4 on education and Goal 5 on gender equality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Objective_of_UNFPA\"><\/span><strong>Objective of UNFPA<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UNFPA works with governments and partners to promote universal access to quality, integrated sexual and reproductive health services. UNFPA also promotes comprehensive sexuality education and youth leadership, which empower young people to exercise autonomy, choice and participation with regard to their sexual and reproductive health and rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"UNFPA_World_Population_Report_2021\"><\/span><strong>UNFPA World Population Report 2021<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recently, the <\/span>United Nations Population Fund\u2019s (UNFPA)<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> flagship <\/span>State of World Population Report 2021<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> titled <\/span>\u2018My Body is My Own\u2019<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was launched.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">The State of World Population<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is an annual report. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) publishes it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>The focus of the Report<\/strong>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> B<\/span>odily autonomy <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is the first time the focus of the report. Bodily autonomy is defined as the power and agency to make choices about your body without fear of violence or having someone else decide for you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The principle of bodily integrity sums up the <\/span>right of each human being, including children, to autonomy and self-determination over their own body.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> It considers an unconsented physical intrusion as a <\/span>human rights<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> violation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the principle has traditionally been raised in connection with practices such as torture, inhumane treatment and forced disappearance, <\/span>bodily integrity has the potential to apply to wide range of human rights violations, which also affect children\u2019s civil rights.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under its ambit also fall <\/span>people with disabilities<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> stripped of their rights to self-determination, to be free from violence and to enjoy a safe and satisfying sexual life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Examples of Violation of Bodily Autonomy:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some examples of violation of bodily autonomy include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">child marriage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">female genital mutilation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lack of contraceptive choices leading to unplanned pregnancy,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">unwanted sex exchanged for a home and food<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">when people with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities cannot walk down a street without fear of assault or humiliation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Key Finding of the Report<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nearly half the women from 57 developing countries <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">do not have the right to make decisions regarding their bodies. Decisions including using contraception, seeking healthcare, or even on their sexuality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Choices over Health Care<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Only 55% of women are fully empowered to make choices over health care, contraception, and the ability to say yes or no to sex.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Maternity Care:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Only 71% of countries guarantee access to overall maternity care<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Access to Contraception:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Only 75% of countries legally ensure full, equal access to contraception.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Sexual health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Only about 80% of countries have laws supporting sexual health and well-being.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Sexuality Education: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Only about 56% of countries have laws and policies supporting comprehensive sexuality education.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"United_Nations_Population_Fund_UNFPA_and_India\"><\/span><strong>United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and India<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the UNFPA reports, India will be the most populous country by the year 2028, although its fertility rate has declined from about 3.6 to 2.4 children in the last three decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In India, according to NFHS-4 (2015-2016), only about 12% of currently married women (15-49 years of age) independently make decisions about their own healthcare.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For a quarter of women (23%), it is the spouse that mainly takes decisions about healthcare.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Information provided to women about use of contraception is also limited.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/entri.sng.link\/Bcofz\/yv45\/8wer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Take free GK mock tests!
