Let\u2019s first look at the most common ones as mentioned in the video lesson.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use\u00a0WILL\u00a0for spontaneous decisions and plans made at the time of speaking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>I think I\u2018ll\u00a0have sushi for lunch.<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>It\u2019s getting late. I think I\u2018ll\u00a0go home.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>*You can notice that we often use \u2018I think\u2019 or \u2018I don\u2019t think\u2019 before \u2018will.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use\u00a0WILL\u00a0to express yourself when thinking or considering plans.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>I think I\u2018ll\u00a0stay home tonight.<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>I don\u2019t think I\u00a0will\u00a0come with you.<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>I\u00a0will\u00a0probably be really busy tomorrow.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Use\u00a0WILL\u00a0for predictions; when we guess or believe something about the future.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>I think I\u2018ll\u00a0probably be really busy on the weekend.<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>I probably\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0be available tomorrow night.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Do I know for sure? No.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We can use\u00a0\u2018will\u2019\u00a0when we are not completely sure. \u201cProbably\u2019 implies that we are quite sure, but not 100%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>I think we\u00a0will be living\u00a0on Mars in 100 years from now.\u00a0(This is future continuous: WILL + BE + VERB ING)<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>I don\u2019t think we\u00a0will\u00a0use cars in the future.<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>I think it\u2018ll\u00a0be really hot tomorrow.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s the difference between WILL and BE GOING TO in these sentences;<\/p>\n<p><strong>a) I think it\u00a0will\u00a0be really hot tomorrow.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AND<\/p>\n<p><strong>b) It\u2018s going to\u00a0be really hot tomorrow.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right!<br \/>\nIn a) I\u2019m not completely sure. I\u2019m making a guess about the future.<br \/>\nIn b) Here I have some evidence. I can see the weather outside and I am quite certain about this prediction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER USES OF \u2018WILL\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To make an offer of help.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry. I\u2019ll help you move house.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Showing that you\u2019re happy and willing to do something<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll pay for drinks tonight.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To make promises.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>\u00a0 I will love you forever.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Show your determination to do something<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0 A: You\u2019re not going to pass that exam.<br \/>\n<em><strong>\u00a0 B: Yes I will!<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s also very common to use BE + VERB ING (Present Continuous) to talk about future plans.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Know When to Use the Present Perfect<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Of all the English verb tenses, the present perfect is probably the one that can give you a headache. Its unique uses can be difficult to understand and very important to use. But there is good news! If you remember a few simple tricks, you can learn to use them well and confidently! Want to know more? Keep reading and find out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introducing the Present Perfect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The present perfect is a tense that links the past to the present\u00a0in some way. That can mean talking about your life experience until now, or describing an action that started in the past and continues in the present, or talking about a recent event that is relevant to now. The key thing is that we never use a finished time with the present perfect (unlike the simple past), such as\u00a0<em>yesterday, last week, in 1995<\/em>. Instead we use an unfinished time expression, like\u00a0<em>today, this week, this year, in your life.<\/em>\u00a0Compare the following:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wse-strapi-image-hosting-wse-dev.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/1_present_perfect_77a07b2819.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to make sentences in the Present Perfect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We create the present perfect by using the verb \u2018have\u2019 and the past participle of a verb. For example,<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou have been to New York.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To make questions we invert \u2018have\u2019 and the subject:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHave you been to New York?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And to make negative forms we add \u2018not\u2019:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou haven\u2019t been to New York.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The only small variation of this is with the third person singular that requires\u00a0<em>has<\/em>\u00a0instead of\u00a0<em>have.<\/em>\u00a0Here is a table with a complete set of examples:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wse-strapi-image-hosting-wse-dev.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/2_present_perfect_8c1c87ad2c.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, it\u2019s common to contract\u00a0<em>have<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0<em>\u2018ve,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>has\u00a0<\/em>to\u00a0<em>\u2018s.<\/em>\u00a0The short answer form is\u00a0<em>Yes, I have\/No, I haven\u2019t.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s look at the three main situations in which we use the Present Perfect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Recent actions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We use the present perfect to describe a recent action or ask if something has happened recently. It\u2019s often used with words like\u00a0<em>just, already, yet, still.<\/em>\u00a0We often use the present perfect in this case when some action or situation has an effect on the present. For example,<\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019ve lost my passport so I can\u2019t get on the plane!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Finished action in recent past \u2013 consequence now.)<\/p>\n<p>Here are some other examples:<\/p>\n<p><em>Have you finished the report yet?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I haven\u2019t seen Pablo today.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sally has just gone out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We\u2019ve already had lunch.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>They still haven\u2019t delivered the goods!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Life experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We use the present perfect to talk about things that have or haven\u2019t happened in our lives, without referring to a specific time. We often use \u2018ever\u2019 in questions with this use, and \u2018never\u2019 in negative sentences. For example,<\/p>\n<p><em>Have you ever been to Montreal?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No, I\u2019ve never been there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>She\u2019s visited Australia three times!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We\u2019ve never missed a flight fortunately.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Has this team ever won a tournament?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After describing the main life experience with the present perfect, it\u2019s typical to give details with the simple past. For example,<\/p>\n<p><em>He\u2019s received three important promotions in his career.\u00a0<\/em>(present perfect)<\/p>\n<p><em>The last one was for the position of CEO.<\/em>\u00a0(simple past)<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Unfinished actions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We also use the present perfect to talk about actions or situations that started in the past and continue in the present. To refer to the time the action started we use \u2018since\u2019, and to refer to a period of time we use \u2018for\u2019. For example,<\/p>\n<p><em>We\u2019ve lived here for 10 years.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>They\u2019ve been married for 25 years.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>How long have you worked for this company?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It hasn\u2019t rained for weeks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You\u2019ve had that car for ages.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Compare the following:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wse-strapi-image-hosting-wse-dev.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/3_present_perfect_e7db48754b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to know when to use the present perfect or the past simple<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you need to choose between using the present perfect and the past simple, ask yourself these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Is the action finished?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>NO Use the present perfect.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>YES Ask yourself the next question.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is there a finished time expression?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>YES Use the simple past.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>NO Use the present perfect.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, once you understand and remember these key facts about the present perfect, it\u2019s easier to use than you previously thought. Read on to find the right way to use it!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What is the present continuous?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The present continuous tense is a grammatical tense that can be used to describe when an action happened or may happen. You can use it to describe both events that are happening in the present \u2013 right now, while you are talking about something, or in the future \u2013 something that may or will happen later on.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You use the present continuous by using the present form of the verb \u201cbe\u201d + the present participle of a verb.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Thing that are happening now<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You can use the present continuous to describe immediate events taking place in the current moment:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Eg. \u201cShe is eating dinner right now and cannot answer the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You can also use it in the same way for the negative form:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Eg. \u201cThey\u2019re not watching TV at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Temporary events<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For longer actions that may be taking place for a temporary period only, you can use the present continuous tense to describe them. It can be used for any temporary situation, no matter how long or short it is.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Eg. \u201cHe\u2019s studying a new language at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A new pattern or habit<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A really interesting way of using the present continuous tense is to describe events or actions that are new and different from events in the past. In this case, the tense can be used to highlight the contrast between the old and new.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Eg. \u201cThese days, people are writing emails a lot less than they used to a few years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It can also be used to describe a regular habit that someone has \u2013 whether it is a good habit, or a bad one!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Eg. \u201cYou\u2019re always running late with all your deadlines!\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Future plans<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When describing something that will take place in the future, the present continuous tense can be used when you are discussing something that is already discussed or planned ahead.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Eg. \u201cWhen we arrive at the airport, we are taking a private car direct to the hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>When not to use!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s important to bear in mind that you cannot use the present continuous for all events taking place in the present. You do not use it to describe events that happen normally, or for a long time:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Eg: \u201cI play the piano every morning\u201d is correct.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI am playing the piano every morning\u201d is not correct, unless it was a new habit you had just started.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Another instance where you do not use the present continuous verb is with non-continuous verbs. These are a small group of verbs that describe things that you cannot normally see someone do, for example: to love, to fear, to want, to cost, and others. With these verbs, you use the present simple tense instead.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Eg. \u201cA loaf of bread costs Rs.30.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You do not say \u201cA loaf of bread is costing Rs.30..\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. The Present Continuous is Not for Facts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We use the simple present and not the present continuous to talk about routines and permanent situations.<\/p>\n<h3>Compare<\/h3>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li><em>I am drinking coffee now. <\/em>(temporary)<\/li>\n<li><em>I drink coffee every morning. <\/em>(routine\/permanent)<\/li>\n<li><em>I\u2019m drinking coffee every morning.-wrong<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>She is going on vacation next week.<\/em> (future)<\/li>\n<li><em>She goes on vacation once a year. <\/em>(routine\/permanent)<\/li>\n<li><em>She\u2019s going on vacation once a year.-wrong<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>5. Use Infinitives of Purpose Instead of <em>\u201cThat\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We can use to + infinitive to say why we do something. It tells the other person the reason. We need to have a normal verb as well.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I went on holiday (this is what I did)\u00a0<b>to relax<\/b>\u00a0(this is why I did it).<\/li>\n<li>She studies hard\u00a0<b>to get<\/b>\u00a0good marks.<\/li>\n<li>He gave up cakes\u00a0<b>to lose<\/b>\u00a0weight.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m calling you\u00a0<b>to ask<\/b>\u00a0for your help.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Be careful! In many languages, we use &#8216;for + infinitive&#8217;. This is\u00a0<b>not correct<\/b>\u00a0in English.<\/p>\n<p>The main verb can be in any tense. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Present simple: I exercise every day to stay healthy.<\/li>\n<li>Present continuous: He&#8217;s saving money to buy a flat.<\/li>\n<li>Past simple: I went to university to get a degree.<\/li>\n<li>Past continuous: She was walking to the shops to buy milk when she met John.<\/li>\n<li>Future simple: He&#8217;ll come to the party later to pick up Julia.<\/li>\n<li>Present perfect: She&#8217;s gone to the library to study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can also use &#8216;in order to + infinitive&#8217; and &#8216;so as to + infinitive&#8217;. &#8216;In order to&#8217; is a bit more formal but the meaning is the same as &#8216;so as to&#8217; and &#8216;to + infinitive&#8217;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I went on holiday to relax.<\/li>\n<li>I went on holiday in order to relax.<\/li>\n<li>I went on holiday so as to relax.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can use a negative infinitive of purpose by adding &#8216;not&#8217; before &#8216;to&#8217;. Often we do this with &#8216;in order not to&#8217; and &#8216;so as not to&#8217;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I drank coffee in order not to fall asleep.<\/li>\n<li>He got up very quietly so as not to wake the children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can only use the infinitive of purpose if the subject of the main verb and the infinitive of purpose are the same. If they are different, we use &#8216;so that + clause&#8217; or &#8216;in order that + clause&#8217;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I went to the library to study. (I went to the library and I studied &#8211; the subject are both &#8216;I&#8217;.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>BUT<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I went to the library so that John could study. (I went to the library, but John studied. The two subjects are different &#8211; I and John &#8211; so we can&#8217;t use an infinitive of purpose.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the verbs &#8216;come&#8217; and &#8216;go&#8217;, we use an infinitive of purpose when they&#8217;re in a normal tense but we often use &#8216;and + infinitive&#8217; with imperatives or after modal verbs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I went home to sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Go home and sleep!<\/li>\n<li>You must go home and sleep!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Your_English_Isnt_Improving\"><\/span><strong>Why Your English Isn\u2019t Improving<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you are a moderate English student, and you feel you are holding on to this level, you might ask yourself: \u201cAfter all this time learning English, why am I not making progress?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The solution may be obvious: Expand your knowledge and learn new vocabulary. And it is true that learning new words, phrases, and structures will help you to improve, but that is part of the story. To achieve advanced levels, as well as greater confidence in using English, you need to refine and integrate what you already know.<\/p>\n<p>Let me illustrate with an example. What I have noticed in my experience of working with English students is that the problems they face when speaking are often very similar. It could have happened to you too: while<\/p>\n<p>you speak English, you feel like you made a lot of mistakes and you start to feel depressed and frustrated.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the good news, though: Do not make too many mistakes. In fact, it is more likely that you will make a few similar mistakes repeatedly during the conversation. So correcting one mistake will help you to feel more natural and fluent in English.<\/p>\n<p>Many of my clients started our secret English lessons frustrated because they had been stuck in the middle class for so long. But soon<\/p>\n<p>focusing on correcting bad habits and consolidating past knowledge, their skills change and they give up. The knowledge that they have acquired over the years is no longer relevant; now they can easily reach it with confidence.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Integrate_What_Youre_Learning\"><\/span><strong>How to Integrate What You\u2019re Learning<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One of the best things you can do right now is to become a fluent speaker.<\/p>\n<p>The progress I have seen my clients make after incorporating this practice into their system is amazing, so I encourage you to give it a try. Here&#8217;s what you need to do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Choose a question to answer.<\/strong> It could be, \u201cWhen was your last vacation? Where did you go and what did you do?\u201d Or, \u201cHow long have you been living in this city? Are you thinking of moving to a different country?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Record your answer. <\/strong>You could use your phone to record a video of yourself speaking, or use a voice recorder app.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Speak for at least one minute. <\/strong>Answer the question and give as much detail as you can.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen to your recording<\/strong> and write down any mistakes we covered today (or any other issues you notice).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Record your answer again<\/strong> and make sure you correct the errors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Try this exercise at least twice a week for a few weeks and you\u2019ll see the difference. If you need help with finding things to talk about, here are some questions you could answer:<\/p>\n<ol data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>What are you doing tonight? How about this weekend? What are your hopes or predictions for next year?<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever been to Canada? Which countries have you visited? Which one was your favorite and why?<\/li>\n<li>How long have you been working at your job? Do you enjoy it? What other jobs would you like to try if you had the chance?<\/li>\n<li>Do you drink coffee every morning? Do you prefer tea? What do you usually do on Sundays?<\/li>\n<li>When you\u2019re having problems at work, can you ask people to help you? Or do you have to find the solutions on your own? Does your manager expect you to work late and on weekends?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Final_Thoughts\"><\/span><strong>Final Thoughts<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re always learning new things and not giving yourself the chance to practice and improve what you already know, how is your language going to evolve?
