Other examples of peripherals are graphics cards, image scanners, expansion cards, tape drives, microphones, webcams, digital cameras\u00a0and loudspeakers. RAM\u00a0or random access memory\u2014span\u00a0the line between peripheral and primary part; it is technically a peripheral\u00a0for storage, but is\u00a0needed for every major function of a contemporary computer and removing the this memory\u00a0will effectively disable any modern machine. Many new devices such as digital watches, \u00a0tablet computers and smartphones have interfaces which help\u00a0them to be used as a peripheral by a full computer, though they are not\u00a0dependent on host as other peripheral devices are. According to the most technical definition, the only pieces of <a href=\"https:\/\/entri.app\/blog\/basic-components-of-computer-and-their-functions-pdf\/\">a computer<\/a>\u00a0<em><i>not<\/i><\/em><em><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/em>well thought out to be peripherals are the CPU or central processing unit, \u00a0computer case, power supply\u00a0and the motherboard.\u00a0Usually, the word peripheral is used to refer to a device outside\u00a0the computer case, like a scanner, but the\u00a0<em><i>devices located inside the computer case are also<\/i><\/em><em><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/em><em><i>peripherals<\/i><\/em><em><i>\u00a0technically.<\/i><\/em>\u00a0Devices that exist outside the computer case are called auxiliary components\u00a0or external peripherals. For e.g. many of the external peripherals owned by people such as\u00a0scanner and printer, connect to the peripheral ports on the back of the computer.\u00a0Devices that are present with in the computer case like the\u00a0internal hard drives or CD-ROM drives are also peripherals in technical terms and are Known as internal peripherals, but may not be identified\u00a0as peripherals by common people.\u00a0In a system on a chip, peripherals are incorporated into the same integrated circuit\u00a0or IC\u00a0as the CPU or the central processing unit. Examples of input devices are\u00a0keyboards, mice, scanners, joysticks,digital cameras\u00a0etc.\u00a0Several\u00a0input devices can be classified according to\u00a0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>modality of input (e.g. \u00a0audio, visual, mechanical motion,etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Discrete input (e.g. key presses) or continuous input (e.g. a mouse&#8217;s position, though digitized into a discrete quantity, is fast enough to be taken as continuous)<\/li>\n<li>Pointing devices, which are input devices used to define the position in space, which can further be classified based on<\/li>\n<li>Whether the input is direct or indirect. With direct input, the input space concurs with the display space, i.e. pointing is done in the space where visible feedback or the pointer appears. Touchscreens and light pens involve direct input. E.g. involving indirect input are the mouse and the<\/li>\n<li>Whether the positional information is implicit(e.g. on a touch screen) or proportional (e.g. with a computer mouse that can be lifted and positioned again)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Direct input is almost necessarily implicit, but indirect input may be either implicit or relative. For e.g, digitizing graphics tablets that do not have an embedded screen have indirect input and sense absolute positions and are frequently run in an absolute input mode, but they may also be established to simulate a relative input mode like that of a touch pad, where the puck or stylus can be lifted and repositioned. Each \u00a0key\u00a0or button, can be used to either input a linguistic character to a computer, or to call upon a particular function of the computer. They\u00a0act as the main text entry device\u00a0for most users. Traditional keyboards consisted of\u00a0spring-based buttons\u00a0where as\u00a0newer variations have\u00a0virtual keys, or projected keyboards. It is device which is like a typewriter composed of a matrix of switches.E.g.\u00a0of types of keyboards are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keyer<\/li>\n<li>Keyboard<\/li>\n<li>Lighted Program Function Keyboard (LPFK)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><b>Pointing Devices<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pointing devices are the most remarkably used input devices today. A\u00a0<strong><b>pointing device<\/b><\/strong> is any human interface device that helps\u00a0a user to input spatial information\u00a0to a computer. In the case of mouse\u00a0and touch pads, this is usually obtained\u00a0by detecting movement across a physical surface. Analog devices, such as \u00a0joysticks,\u00a03D mice, or pointing sticks, work\u00a0by reporting their deflection angle. Movements of the pointing device are reflected\u00a0on the screen by movements of the pointer, causing\u00a0a simple, spontaneous way to navigate a computer&#8217;s GUI or graphical user interface.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>Composite Devices<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Input devices, like the\u00a0buttons and joysticks, can work together on a single physical device that could be considered\u00a0as a composite device. Several\u00a0gaming devices have controllers in \u00a0this\u00a0form. These include on-screen data, printed documents, \u00a0and sound. An\u00a0output device\u00a0helps in the transmission of data by the computer in a human\u00a0understandable\u00a0form, for e.g., sound generated through a speaker.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Examples_of_Output_Devices\"><\/span><strong><b>Examples<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>\u00a0of Output Devices<\/b><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Given here are some examples of output devices which\u00a0includes\u00a0input\/output devices.\u00a0Printers and visual displays are the most common example of\u00a0output device for interfacing to people, but voice is becoming progressively available. Examples of output devices include Printer, Voice output communication aid, Speakers, Headphones, Screen (Monitor), Automotive navigation system, Braille embosser, Projector, Plotter, Television, Radio\u00a0etc. Lets discuss some of the output devices briefly:<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>Monitor <\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Monitor is the \u00a0main output device of a computer. It forms images by converting electrical signals into light by forming\u00a0tiny dots on the screen called pixels. The resolution of the image depends upon the number of these pixels.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>Printer<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A printer is used\u00a0to print information\u00a0in the computer\u00a0on a paper. Information shown on a display device is known as\u00a0soft copy\u00a0because the information exists electronically and is displayed for a short\u00a0period of time. Display devices consists of LCD monitors,\u00a0CRT monitors and other such displays\u00a0like gas plasma monitors, and televisions.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"InputOutput\"><\/span><strong><b>Input\/Output<\/b><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are many I\/o devices which are multi-functional like printers and computer-based navigation systems that are used for specialized or specific applications. In computing, input\/output refers to the communication between an information processing system like computer), and the external world. Inputs are the signals or data received by the computer, and outputs are the signals or data generated by it.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Storage_Devices\"><\/span><strong><b>Storage Devices<\/b><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A hardware device that is\u00a0used to store digital data and applications which may be in the form of video, audio,\u00a0images, \u00a0etc. is known a storage device. It is a main component of a computer. Hard drive is one of the examples of a storage devices.\u00a0In computer science,\u00a0<strong><b>memory<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0devices are used to store information for use in a computer. The term primary memory is used for storage devices which function at high-speed (e.g. RAM)\u00a0as different from secondary memory, which gives\u00a0program and data storage that is slow to access but offer higher capacity.
