These persons who resigned included Madan Mohan Malviya, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, \u00a0and Mazhar Ul Haq.<\/li>\n<li>In response to oppose this act, a nationwide protest was called by Gandhiji on 6th\u00a0 This came to known as the Rowlatt Satyagraha.<\/li>\n<li>The movement was cancelled by Gandhiji when it was damaged by rioting in some states, particularly in Punjab where the situation was unappeasable.<\/li>\n<li>The British government\u2019s major motive was to suppress the growing nationalist movement in the state.<\/li>\n<li>The British were also concerned about the Ghadarite revolution in Punjab and the rest of India.<\/li>\n<li>Two major Congress leaders Satya Pal and Saifuddin Kitchlew were taken under custody.<\/li>\n<li>The protest was very immense when the act came into effect and the army was called to tackle the situation in the state of Punjab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3MWTnuS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Grab study materials to strengthen your GK !!! The Act gave the government tremendous powers to suppress political activities and allowed the detention of political\u00a0leaders\u00a0as prisoners without any legal proceedings\u00a0for two years.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Formally called the Anarchical and Revolutionary Crimes Act, 1919.<\/li>\n<li>Introduced in 1919 in the month of March by the Imperial Legislative Council.<\/li>\n<li>This act empowered the British authority to arrest anybody suspected of terrorist activities.<\/li>\n<li>It also gave power to the government to detain person arrested under this act for up to 2 years without trial.<\/li>\n<li>It allowed the police to search for a place without a warrant.<\/li>\n<li>It also imposed strict restrictions on the freedom of the press.<\/li>\n<li>The act was introduced by the Rowlatt Committee chaired by a judge, Sir Sidney Rowlatt, after whom this act was<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><b>Indians opposition towards Rowlatt act<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Indians opposed this\u00a0act due to the following reasons<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This act was passed through the Imperial Legislative Council in haste, even though it was completely unapproved by the Indian members.<\/li>\n<li>It had given the Government enormous powers to repress political activities in the country.<\/li>\n<li>It also allowed the detention of political leaders without trial for two years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><b>Rowlatt act<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>: The cause of <\/b>Jallianwala Bagh<\/strong> <strong><b>Massacre<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The condition in Punjab was getting worse as there were riots and protests against the Rowlatt Act.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Punjab was put under martial law,<\/b><\/strong>which meant that it became unlawful for more than four\u00a0persons\u00a0to assemble at a place.<\/li>\n<li>The Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab was\u00a0<strong><b>Michael O\u2019Dwyer <\/b><\/strong>during that time and\u00a0<strong><b>Lord Chelmsford<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0was Viceroy\u00a0of India.<\/li>\n<li>During the festival of <strong><b>Baisakhi on 13 April 1919 in Jallianwala Bagh,<\/b><\/strong> a public garden in Amritsar, a group\u00a0of non-violent protesters had assembled. Also, among them\u00a0were pilgrims who had come to celebrate Baisakhi.<\/li>\n<li>General Dyer reached there with his troops and blocked the only narrow entrance to the garden.<\/li>\n<li>Then, without warning, he ordered his troops to\u00a0<strong><b>fire at the unarmed <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>gathering<\/b><\/strong>, which had children as well.<\/li>\n<li>The indiscriminate firing went on for about ten minutes until the 1650 rounds of bullets were exhausted. This resulted in the deaths of at least 1000 people and left more than 1500 people<\/li>\n<li>This incident came as a big shock to Indians and totally destroyed their belief in the British system of justice.<\/li>\n<li>National leaders opposed the act and Dyer equally.<\/li>\n<li>However, Dyer was praised by many in Britain and the British in India, although some people in the British government were quick to condemn Those who condemned his actions were\u00a0<strong><b>Winston Churchill<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0and former\u00a0<strong><b>Prime Minister H.H Asquith<\/b><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The government set up the\u00a0<strong><b>Hunter Commission <\/b><\/strong>to investigate into the massacre. Although the commission criticized\u00a0the act by Dyer, it did not enforce any disciplinary action against him.<\/li>\n<li>He was relieved of his duties in the army in 1920.<\/li>\n<li>In protest against the massacre and the British failure to give due justice to the victims,<strong><b>Gandhiji relinquished his title \u2018Kaiser-e-hind\u2019<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>given\u00a0on him by the British for his services during the Boer War in South Africa\u00a0<strong><b>and <\/b><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><b>Rabindranath Tagore gave up his knighthood<\/b><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Michael O\u2019Dwyer, the then\u00a0Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab, who had approved the actions of Brigadier-General Dyer,\u00a0was\u00a0<strong><b>assassinated by Udham Singh <\/b><\/strong>in London in 1940 as revenge against the massacre.
