Also known as affirmative action, the reservation can also be seen as positive discrimination. Download Entri App!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_extent_of_Reservation_in_India\"><\/span><strong>The extent of Reservation in India<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In India, reservation is provided in:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Government Educational Institutions (like IITs, IIMs etc) \u2013 as per Article 15 \u2013 (4), (5), and (6)<\/li>\n<li>Government Jobs (like\u00a0IAS,\u00a0IPS\u00a0etc) \u2013 as per Article 16 \u2013 (4) and (6)<\/li>\n<li>Legislatures (Parliament, and\u00a0State Legislature) \u2013 as per Article 334<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Before 2019, the reservation was provided mainly on the basis of\u00a0social and educational backwardness\u00a0(caste). However, after the 103rd constitutional amendment in 2019,\u00a0economic backwardness is also taken into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the reservation quota, other relaxations like upper-age relaxations, additional attempts, and lower cut-off marks are also offered for different reservation categories.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reservation_quota_in_India_for_Government_Jobs\"><\/span><strong>Reservation quota in India for Government Jobs<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19803\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19803\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19803 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clearias.com\/up\/Reservation-Category-vs-Reservation-Quota.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clearias.com\/up\/Reservation-Category-vs-Reservation-Quota.jpg 744w, https:\/\/www.clearias.com\/up\/Reservation-Category-vs-Reservation-Quota-300x170.jpg 300w\" alt=\"Reservation Category vs Reservation Quota\" width=\"744\" height=\"421\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reservation quota in India for Government Jobs and Higher Educational Institutions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A vacancy reserved for SCs or STs or OBCs cannot be occupied by a candidate other than an SC or ST or OBC candidate, as the case may be.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned in the given table, about <strong>60% of seats are reserved in India<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 for different sections like ST, SC, OBC, and EWS \u2013 with respect to Government jobs and Higher Education Institutions. 3% of seats are also reserved for differently-abled persons over all categories.<\/p>\n<p>This also means that\u00a0<strong>only 40% of seats are available under merit.\u00a0<\/strong>In the merit seats,\u00a0not only the general category candidates but all other categories like SC, ST, OBC, and EWS can also compete.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"SCST_Reservation\"><\/span><strong>SC\/ST Reservation<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The purpose of providing reservations to the Scheduled Castes(SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) in services is not only to give jobs to some persons belonging to these communities. It usually aims at allowing them and assuring their involvement in the decision-making process of the State. Moreover, the state is also keen to end practices such as untouchability.<\/p>\n<p>Scheduled Castes (SC) are provided 15% quota in jobs\/higher educational institutions while Schedule Tribes (ST) are provided 7.5% quota in jobs\/higher educational institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Reservation is offered not only with respect to direct selection but also with respect to promotions for SC\/ST category (Article 16(4A)).<\/p>\n<p>There is no concept of \u2018creamy layer\u2019 with respect to SC\/ST reservation. The quota for OBCs is 27% in government jobs and higher educational institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, there is a concept of \u2018creamy layer\u2019 with respect to the OBC reservation. Only those from OBC who comes under Non-Creamy Layer would get OBC reservation.<\/p>\n<p>The creamy layer concept presents income and social status as parameters to eliminate some of the privileged members of OBC from the extent of reservation. Register Here!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"EWS_Reservation\"><\/span><strong>EWS Reservation<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Central Government of India nearly launched EWS Reservation. 10% quota is given for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) among General Category candidates in government jobs and educational institutions. This policy is practiced even in Parliament and all elections where a little constituencies are reserved for those from specific communities (which will next rotate in 2026 per the Delimitation Commission).
