Technically, an article is considered an adjective, which is any word that changes a noun. Usually, adjectives change nouns through the description, but articles are used rather than point out or refer to nouns. There are two distinct types of articles that we use in writing and conversation to point out or refer to a noun or group of nouns: definite and indefinite articles.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Definite Article<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start by looking at the\u00a0<strong>definite article<\/strong>. This article is the word &#8216;the,&#8217; and it guides directly to a specific noun or groups of nouns. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the freckles on my face<\/li>\n<li>the alligator in the river<\/li>\n<li>the breakfast burrito on my table<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each noun or group of nouns being directed to &#8211; in these cases freckles, alligator, and breakfast burrito &#8211; is direct and clear.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Indefinite Articles<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Indefinite articles<\/strong>\u00a0are the words &#8216;a&#8217; and &#8216;an&#8217; and each of these articles is used to direct to a noun, but the noun being directed to is not a typical person, place, object, or idea. It can be any noun from a set of nouns. For instance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a Ford from the car lot<\/li>\n<li>an occurrence in history<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In each case, the noun is not precise. Proper nouns normally do not take an article.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>o The man is jogging. (A particular man)<\/p>\n<p>o I saw the boy robbing.<\/p>\n<p>o Where is the pen I gave you last month?<\/p>\n<p>o I gave him a pencil, but he lost the pencil. (\u2018a pencil\u2019 became \u2018the pencil\u2019 in the second clause because that pencil was not a random pencil anymore.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes \u2018the\u2019\u00a0is utilized to generalize a set\/whole class.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>o The dog is a loyal animal. (Refers to the entire species of dog.)<\/p>\n<p>o The English are industrious. (Directs to the people of England as a nation)<\/p>\n<p>o The honest are respected. (The+adjectives = plural noun)<\/p>\n<p>o The poor are not always dishonest. (The+adjectives = plural noun)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule 3:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To particularise a non-count noun \u2018the\u2019 is needed before it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>o The water of the Arctic sea is freezing.<\/p>\n<p>o Please return the cash I lent you last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule 4:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018The\u2019 is compulsory before a thing that is only one of a type in the universe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>o The moon is shining tonight.<\/p>\n<p>o The earth is moving around the sun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use of \u2018the\u2019\u00a0before geographical places :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule 5:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Employing \u2018the\u2019\u00a0with geographical nouns normally depends on the size and plurality of the things those nouns guide to.\u00a0\u2018The\u2019\u00a0is generally used everywhere except in some circumstances. So, it\u2019s more reasonable to know those exceptions first.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u2019\u00a0must not precede:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>o Names of continents: Asia, Europe, North America, Antarctica, Australia, Africa, South America.<\/p>\n<p>o Names of countries: Australia, Bolivia, England, France, Spain, etc.<\/p>\n<p>o Names of states, cities, or towns:\u00a0Los Angeles, Sydney, London, Alaska,<\/p>\n<p>o Names of streets: George street, Albion Street, New town street,<\/p>\n<p>o Names of\u00a0<strong>singular<\/strong>\u00a0lakes and bays:\u00a0Lake Carey, Lake Eyre, Lake Hillier, Shark Bay,<\/p>\n<p>o Names of\u00a0<strong>single<\/strong>\u00a0mountains:\u00a0are Mount Everest, Mount Solitary, Mount Bindo, Mount Fuji, etc.<\/p>\n<p>o Names of\u00a0<strong>single<\/strong>\u00a0islands:\u00a0Easter Island, Bird Island, Fatima Island, Bare Island,<\/p>\n<p>o Names of languages: Spanish, English, Russian,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(When\u00a0\u2018the\u2019\u00a0precedes these nouns, they refer to the population of those languages.)<\/p>\n<p>o Names of sports:\u00a0cricket, football, basketball,<\/p>\n<p>o Names of discipline\/subject of studies: biology, history, computer science, mathematics,<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018The\u2019\u00a0is a most used article in English. Except for the list said above and proper nouns,\u00a0\u2018the\u2019\u00a0is used before almost all the nouns which symbolize something definite\/particular. The above list has some opposite factors also. How do you know?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The choice of the article is based upon the phonetic (sound) grade of the first letter in a word, not on the orthographic (written) indication of the letter. If the first letter constructs a vowel-type sound, you use &#8220;an&#8221;; if the first letter would construct a consonant-type sound, you use &#8220;a.&#8221; Yet, even if you follow these essential rules when choosing to use &#8220;a&#8221; or &#8220;an,&#8221; remember that there are some exceptions to these rules.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>A<\/strong>&#8221; reaches before words that start with consonants.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0cat<\/li>\n<li><strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0dog<\/li>\n<li><strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0purple onion<\/li>\n<li><strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0buffalo<\/li>\n<li><strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0big apple<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>An<\/strong>&#8221; reaches before words that start with vowels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>an<\/strong>\u00a0apricot<\/li>\n<li><strong>an<\/strong>\u00a0egg<\/li>\n<li><strong>an<\/strong>\u00a0Indian<\/li>\n<li><strong>an<\/strong>\u00a0orbit<\/li>\n<li><strong>an<\/strong>\u00a0uprising<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Exceptions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Use &#8220;<strong>an<\/strong>&#8221; before a silent or unsounded &#8220;h.&#8221; Because the &#8220;h&#8221; does not have any phonetic expression or audible sound, the sound that pursues the article is a vowel; consequently, &#8220;an&#8221; is used.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>an<\/strong>\u00a0honorable peace<\/li>\n<li><strong>an<\/strong>\u00a0honest error<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When &#8220;u&#8221; has the same sound as the &#8220;y&#8221; in &#8220;you,&#8221; or &#8220;o&#8221; makes the same sound as &#8220;w&#8221; in &#8220;won,&#8221; then\u00a0<strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0is used. The word-initial &#8220;y&#8221; sound (&#8220;unicorn&#8221;) is a glide [j] phonetically, which includes consonantal properties; therefore, it is treated as a consonant, requiring &#8220;a.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0union<\/li>\n<li><strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0united front<\/li>\n<li><strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0unicorn<\/li>\n<li><strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0used napkin<\/li>\n<li><strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0U.S. ship<\/li>\n<li><strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0one-legged man<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We hope that now you\u2019ve mastered definite and indefinite articles, and also the usage and exceptions.
