The oldest group of bronze sculptures from the Indian subcontinent date back to the 3rd millennium B.C.E<\/p>\n<p>A bronze sculpture, often simply called \u2018a bronze\u2019, is a three-dimensional piece of art made by pouring molten bronze into a mould, before leaving it to solidify. The earliest \u2018bronze\u2019 products were actually made from copper and arsenic, and many ancient \u2018bronzes\u2019 have later been revealed actually to be\u00a0brass, an alloy of copper and zinc.The earliest bronze sculpture perhaps dates back to 2500 BCE in the form of a girl who is dancing in a tribangha posture that is Mohenjodaro. Bronze sculpture is made via a process known as\u00a0<em>casting<\/em>: pouring molten metal into a mould and leaving it to solidify.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/entri.sng.link\/Bcofz\/yv45\/8wer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25524707 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/entri.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/blog-banner1-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"345\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/entri.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/blog-banner1-1.png 345w, https:\/\/entri.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/blog-banner1-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/entri.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/blog-banner1-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/entri.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/blog-banner1-1-24x24.png 24w, https:\/\/entri.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/blog-banner1-1-48x48.png 48w, https:\/\/entri.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/blog-banner1-1-96x96.png 96w, https:\/\/entri.app\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/blog-banner1-1-75x75.png 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indian_Bronze_Sculpture\"><\/span><strong>Indian Bronze Sculpture<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>During the medieval\u00a0 period the bronze sculpture reached its highest peak of development in south India and bronze images were modelled and cast during the Pallava period in the eighth and ninth centuries, some of the most elegant and exquisite statues were produced during the Chola Period:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>North India<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>North India<\/li>\n<li>Dancing girl \u2013 Mohanjadaro.<\/li>\n<li>Chariot \u2013 Daimabad (Maharashtra) datable to 1500\u00a0BCE.<\/li>\n<li>Interesting\u00a0images of Jain Thirthankaras\u00a0have been discovered from Chausa, Bihar, belonging to the\u00a0Kushana period during the 2nd century CE.<\/li>\n<li>These shows how the Indian sculptors had mastered the modelling of masculine\u00a0human physique and simplified muscles.<\/li>\n<li>Remarkable is the depiction of\u00a0Adinath or Vrishabhanath, who is identified with long\u00a0hair locks\u00a0dropping to his shoulders.\u00a0Otherwise the thirthankaras are noted by their short curly hair.<\/li>\n<li>Many standing Buddha images with right hand in Abhaya Mudra were cast in the North India, particularly in UP and Bihar, during the Gupta and the Post-Gupta periods.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<span class=\"gmw_\">Sanghati<\/span>or\u00a0the Monks Robeis wrapped to cover the shoulders, which turn over the arm, while the other end of the drapery is wrapped over the left arm.<\/li>\n<li>The cloths of Buddha figures were\u00a0thin.<\/li>\n<li>The figure appears youthful and proportionate in comparison with the Kushana style.<\/li>\n<li>In the typical bronze from Dhanesar Khera, UP, the folds of the drapery are treated as in the Mathura style, i.e., in a series of dropping down curves.<\/li>\n<li>Sarnath style bronze have fold less drapery and an outstanding example is that of the Buddha image at Sultanganj, Bihar, which is a quiet monumental bronze figure.<\/li>\n<li>Vakataka bronze images of Buddha from Phophnar, Maharashtra are contemporary with the Gupta period bronzes. They show the influence of the Amaravati style of Andhra Pradesh in the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0century and at the same time, there is a significant change in the draping style of monk\u2019s robe.<\/li>\n<li>Buddha\u2019s right hand in Abhaya Mudra is free so that the contemporary drapery clings to the right side of the body contour. The result is a continuous flowing line on this side of the figure.<\/li>\n<li>The additional importance of the\u00a0Gupta and Vakataka\u00a0bronze is that\u00a0they were portable\u00a0and monks carried them from place to place for the purpose of individual worship or to be installed in Buddhist Viharas.<\/li>\n<li>In the manner, the refined classical style spread to different parts of India and to Asian countries overseas.<\/li>\n<li>Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir regions also produced bronze images of Buddhist deities as well as Hindu gods and goddesses.<\/li>\n<li>Most of these were created during the 8<sup>th<\/sup>, 9<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0centuries and have a very distinct style in comparison with bronze from other parts of India.<\/li>\n<li>A noteworthy development is the\u00a0growth of different types of iconography of Vishnu images.<\/li>\n<li>Four headed Vishnu, also known as\u00a0Chaturanana or Vaikuntha Vishnu, was worshipped in these regions.<\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0Buddhist\u00a0centres like Nalanda, a school of bronze casting emerged around the 9<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, during the rule of the\u00a0Pala dynasty\u00a0in Bihar and Bengal regions.<\/li>\n<li>In the gap of a few centuries the sculptors at Kurkihar<span class=\"gmw_\">\u00a0near Nalanda were able to revive the classical style of the Gupta period.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>A remarkable bronze is of a\u00a0four armed Avalokiteswara, which is a good example of male figure in graceful\u00a0<span class=\"gm_ gm_e4189d99-c6b5-adf1-868f-ba47f76c1616 gm-spell\">tribhanga<\/span>\u00a0posture.<\/li>\n<li>Worship of female goddesses\u00a0was adopted which is a part of the growth of theVajrayana phase in Buddhism. Images of\u00a0Tarabecame popular. Seated on the throne, she is accompanied by a growing curvilinear lotus stalk and her right hand is in Abhaya Mudra.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/entri.sng.link\/Bcofz\/yv45\/8wer\"><strong>Attempt Free Mock Tests For GK &#8211; Download Entri App!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>South India<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The bronze casting technique and making of bronze images of traditional icons reached a high stage of development in south India during the medieval period.<\/li>\n<li>Among the\u00a0Pallava period\u00a0bronze of the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, the best one is the\u00a0icon of Shiva\u00a0seated in Ardhaparyanka asana (one leg kept dangling). The right hand is in the\u00a0Achamana Mudra gesture<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>suggesting that he is about to drink poison.<\/li>\n<li>Although bronze images were modeled and cast during the Pallava period in the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and 9th centuries, some of the most beautiful and exquisite statues were produced during the\u00a0Chola period\u00a0in Tamil Nadu from 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0to 12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century AD.<\/li>\n<li>The technique of art fashioning bronze images is still skilfully practiced in South India, particularly in\u00a0Kumbakonam.<\/li>\n<li>The distinguished patron during the 10<sup>th<\/sup><span class=\"gmw_\">\u00a0century was the widowed Chola Queen,<\/span><span class=\"gmw_\">Sembiyan<\/span>\u00a0Maha Devi<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Chola bronze images are the most sought after collectors\u2019 items by art lovers all over the world.<\/li>\n<li>The well known dancing figure of\u00a0Shiva as Nataraja\u00a0was evolved and fully developed during the\u00a0Chola period\u00a0and since then many variations of this complex bronze image have been modeled.<\/li>\n<li>A wide range of Shiva iconography was evolved in the Tanjore region of Tamil Nadu.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The 9<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century\u00a0Kalyanasundara Murti\u00a0is highly remarkable for the manner in which panigrahana (ceremony of marriage) is represented by two separate statuettes.<\/li>\n<li>Shiva with his extended right hand accepts Parvati\u2019s (the bride\u2019s) right hand, who is depicted with a bashful expression and taking a step forward.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0union of Shiva and Parvati\u00a0is very ingeniously represented in the\u00a0Ardhanarisvrain a single image. Beautiful independent figurines of Parvati have also been modelled, standing in the graceful tribhanga posture.<\/li>\n<li>During the 16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century known as the Vijayanagara period in Andhra Pradesh, the sculptors experimented with portrait sculpture in order to preserve knowledge of the royal patrons for prosperity. At Tirupati, the life-size standing portrait statue was cast in bronze, depicting Krishnadevaraya with his two queens, Tirumalamba and Chinnadevi.<\/li>\n<li>The sculpture has combined the likeness of the facial features with certain elements of idealization.<\/li>\n<li>The idealization is further observed in the manner the physical body is modeled to appear imposing as well as graceful.<\/li>\n<li>The standing King and Queens are depicted in a praying posture, that is, both hands in the Namaskara mudra<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indian_Bronze_Sculpture_%E2%80%93_Significance\"><\/span><strong>Indian Bronze Sculpture &#8211; Significance<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Bronze statues played a significant role in the historical period. Kings make bronze statues of their lovely queen, Goddess of the fort or city, previous kings, own statues and many more. Hence, bronze statues were popular from older era. Till today, also it maintains consistency in its valuation, quality, lasting and attraction. During Mohenjodaro and Harappan civilization, the bronze was used very much for art and statues. The bronze statues of many lady dancers, couple dancers in various acts and many kings, queens, God and goddess were found during digging up the same area. Indian sculptors had mastered the bronze medium and the casting process as much as they had mastered terracotta sculpture and carving in stone. The bronze sculptures are characterised by exquisite beauty and aesthetic appeal. Over the long creative period of Egyptian dynastic art, small lost-wax bronze figurines were made in large numbers; several thousand of them have been conserved in museum collections.<\/p>\n<p>The 7th-8th century Sri Lankan Sinhalese bronze statue of Buddhist Tara, now in the British Museum, is an excellent example of Sri Lankan bronze statues.
