It is the world&#8217;s\u00a020th-largest desert, and the world&#8217;s 9th-largest hot subtropical desert. The Thar Desert is about 4.56% of the total geographical area of India. About 85% of the Thar Desert is in India, and about 15% is in Pakistan. It is bordered by the irrigated\u00a0Indus River\u00a0plain to the west, the\u00a0Punjab Plain\u00a0to the north and northeast, the\u00a0Aravalli Range\u00a0to the southeast, and the\u00a0Rann of Kachchh\u00a0to the south. The\u00a0subtropical desert climate\u00a0there results from\u00a0persistent\u00a0high pressure\u00a0and subsidence at that\u00a0latitude.<\/p>\n<p>There are several\u00a0protected areas\u00a0in the Thar Desert:<\/p>\n<p><strong>In India:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Desert National Park:<\/strong> Covers about 3,162 km<sup>2<\/sup> (1,221 sq mi) in Rajasthan and it includes 44 villages represents the Thar Desert ecosystem. Its diverse fauna\u00a0includes the\u00a0great Indian bustard,\u00a0blackbuck,\u00a0chinkara, fox,\u00a0Bengal fox, wolf, and\u00a0caracal. Seashells and massive\u00a0fossilized\u00a0tree trunks in this park record the geological history of the desert.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The\u00a0Tal Chhapar Sanctuary:<\/strong> It Covers about 7 km<sup>2<\/sup> (2.7 sq mi) area, located in the Churu District, 210 km (130 mi) from Jaipur, in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. It is an important bird area. This sanctuary is home to large populations of blackbuck, fox, caracal, partridge, and sand grouse.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The\u00a0Sundha Mata Conservation Reserve: <\/strong>It covers an area of 117.49 km<sup>2<\/sup> (45.36 sq mi) and it is located in the Jalore District of Rajasthan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In Pakistan:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The\u00a0Nara Desert Wildlife Sanctuary:<\/strong> Covers an area about 6,300 km<sup>2<\/sup> (2,400 sq mi) and it is located in is located in\u00a0Mirpurkhas District. It contains the largest population of the endangered\u00a0mugger crocodile in Pakistan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The\u00a0Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary:<\/strong>\u00a0located in\u00a0Badin District\u00a0is an Important Bird Area and\u00a0Ramsar Site, with 30 species of mammals, 112 bird species, 20 reptiles, and 22 important plant species.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The\u00a0Lal Suhanra Biosphere Reserve and National Park:<\/strong> It is a UNESCO declared biosphere reserve,\u00a0which covers 65,791 hectares (254.02\u00a0sq\u00a0mi) the\u00a0Cholistan region of the Greater Thar Desert.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/entri.sng.link\/Bcofz\/yv45\/8wer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Attempt Free GK Mock test ! The desert stretches to Punjab and Haryana in the north, to the\u00a0Great Rann of Kutch\u00a0along the coast, and to the alluvial plains of the\u00a0Indus River\u00a0in the west and northwest.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Land<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The Thar desert sands\u00a0overlie\u00a0Archean\u00a0<span id=\"ref138032\"><\/span>gneiss,\u00a0Proterozoic\u00a0sedimentary rocks\u00a0(formed about 2.5 billion to 541 million years ago), and more-recent\u00a0alluvium.<\/li>\n<li>The surface consists of <span id=\"ref138033\"><\/span>aeolian sand that has accumulated over the past 1.8 million years.<\/li>\n<li>The soils consist of several main groups- desert soils, red deserted soils, sierozems (brownish gray soils), the red and yellow soils of the foothills, the saline soils of the depressions, and the lithosols (shallow weathered soils) and\u00a0regosols\u00a0(soft loose soils) found in the hills.<\/li>\n<li>The amount of annual rainfall in the desert is generally low, ranging from about 4 inches (100 mm) or less in the west to about 20 inches (500 mm) in the east.<\/li>\n<li>The desert vegetation is mostly herbaceous or stunted scrub; drought- resistant trees occasionally dot the landscape, especially in the east.<\/li>\n<li>On the hills, gum arabic\u00a0acacia\u00a0and euphorbia may be found.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<span id=\"ref1028021\"><\/span>khajri\u00a0(or\u00a0khejri) tree (Prosopis cineraria) grows throughout the plains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong><span id=\"Climate\" class=\"mw-headline\">Climate<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The desert has both a very dry part and a semidesert part (in the east) that has fewer sand dunes and slightly more precipitation.<\/li>\n<li>The climate is arid and subtropical.<\/li>\n<li>Average annual rainfall ranges from 100 to 500 mm, and occurs during the short July-to-September southwest monsoon.<\/li>\n<li>Average temperature varies with season, and extremes can range from near-freezing in the winter to more than 50\u00ba C in the summer months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong><span id=\"People\" class=\"mw-headline\">People<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>About 40% of the total population of\u00a0Rajasthan lives in the Thar Desert.<\/li>\n<li>The Thar Desert is the most widely populated desert in the world, with a population density of 83 people per km<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li>The ethnic\u00a0composition\u00a0of the Thar is\u00a0diverse.<\/li>\n<li>In India, the inhabitants comprise\u00a0Hindus,\u00a0Jains,\u00a0Sikhs, and\u00a0Muslims.<\/li>\n<li>In Pakistan, inhabitants include both Muslims and Hindus.<\/li>\n<li>The main occupations of the inhabitants are agriculture and\u00a0animal husbandry<\/li>\n<li>The prevailing languages are\u00a0Sindhi\u00a0in the southwest,\u00a0Lahnda\u00a0in the northwest, and\u00a0Rajasthani languages in central and eastern portions of the Thar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3MWTnuS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grab Study Materials to Strengthen your Knowledge in GK!! Jaisalmer State\u2019s historical foundations are in the large empire ruled by the Bhati dynasty. The empire stretched from what is now\u00a0Ghazni, in modern-day Afghanistan to what is\u00a0Sialkot,\u00a0Lahore\u00a0and\u00a0Rawalpindi in modern-day Pakistan to the region that is Bathinda and Hanumangarh in modern-day India.\u00a0The empire crumbled over time because of continuous invasions from warriors in central Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Jaisalmer was founded as the new capital in 1156 by\u00a0Maharawal Jaisal Singh\u00a0and the state took its name from the capital. On 11 December 1818 Jaisalmer became a\u00a0British protectorate\u00a0through the\u00a0Rajputana Agency. In 1965 and 1971, population exchanges took place in the Thar between India and Pakistan; 3,500 Muslims shifted from the Indian section of the Thar to Pakistani Thar, whilst thousands of Hindu families also migrated from Pakistani&#8217;s Thar to the Indian section.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Great_Indian_Desert-_Features\"><\/span><strong>The Great Indian Desert- Features<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Indian desert lies on the western edge of the hills of Aravalli.<\/li>\n<li>It is an undulating sandy plain surrounded by dunes of sand.<\/li>\n<li>Very low rainfall, below 150 mm per year, occurs in this area. With poor vegetation cover, it has an arid atmosphere.<\/li>\n<li>During the rainy season, streams emerge. They vanish into the sand shortly after, as they do not have enough water.<\/li>\n<li>In this area, Luni is the only large river. Barchans (crescent-shaped dunes) cover larger areas, but along the Indo-Pakistan border, longitudinal dunes are becoming more prevalent.<\/li>\n<li>The grass in the desert has multi-purpose medicinal features.
