They soften the request and does not make it\u00a0sound \u00a0like you are ordering someone to do something. For eg,\u00a0it would be more polite to say\u00a0\u201cI would like a cup of tea, please\u201d, instead of \u00a0\u201cI want a cup of tea\u201d, or, even worse\u00a0way of asking is:\u201cGive me a cup of tea\u201d. So what can\u00a0one do to be respectful when he or she has to communicate with\u00a0elders or superiors?<\/p>\n<p>Well, there are unquestionably many ways to do it! And that\u2019s what we\u00a0will discuss in this section. It includes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>greeting people with respect<\/li>\n<li>addressing people with respect<\/li>\n<li>important &amp; respectful phrases that one should use<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong><b>Greet respectful<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>ly<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>So how do you greet with respect? How do you show that same respect when\u00a0you&#8217;re communicating in English\u00a0that you would when you communicate in languages like Japanese, Hindi, Arabic etc?<\/p>\n<p>In English we\u00a0don&#8217;t have many pronouns that show respect in general everyday communication, but you can show respect in other ways and the most appropriate\u00a0way to show respect in English is by greeting someone properly. It&#8217;s going to set the tone for the whole conversation and most of them\u00a0choose to greet with a really informal\u00a0hey, <em><i>hello, hi.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is a casual and friendly way to say hello.\u00a0Perfectly acceptable greeting but if you \u00a0want to show respect to somebody\u00a0you can make your language a little more formal. In most of the\u00a0Asian cultures \u00a0there have been specific pronouns used to show respect especially when you&#8217;re referring to someone who\u00a0is elder to\u00a0you, you might use\u00a0<strong><b>auntie<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong><b>uncle.<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In English we don&#8217;t have many specific titles that straight\u00a0away show respect but there are some exceptions made for certain professions. So we address doctors and people with other professions by adding prefixes like<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><\/b><b><\/b>+ surname<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Professor<\/b><\/strong>+ surname<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Example.\u00a0<strong><b>Dr. Jones.<\/b><\/strong><strong><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/strong>Maybe for some professors, you might do the same thing,<strong><b>\u00a0Professor <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>Choudry<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>.<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>In a formal situation or at\u00a0schools, we would use a certain title followed by a person&#8217;s name like\u00a0<strong><b>Miss <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>Salma<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>\u00a0Jakobi<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0or<strong><b>\u00a0Miss Jakobi<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0for \u00a0woman\u00a0or<strong><b>\u00a0Mrs Smith<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0if it was a married woman.\u00a0Now some teachers and most likely the\u00a0teachers at language schools or even tutors at universities may just prefer to be called\u00a0by their first name and if you&#8217;re unsure about what to call them you can politely ask them by using the following expressions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><\/i><em><i>How should I address you?<\/i><\/em><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i><em><i>Should I call you Mr <\/i><\/em><em><i>Smith<\/i><\/em><em><i>?<\/i><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That way, you\u00a0will find out exactly what they expect and what they feel comfortable with.<\/p>\n<p>Now lets\u00a0talk about the\u00a0titles that are not often used and sometimes can seem so formal that they make people feel a little uncomfortable especially if they&#8217;re used in the wrong context.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Sir<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><b>madam<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong><b>ma&#8217;am\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>are not very common in countries like Australia or in the UK. However, they may be heard a little more often in parts of the United States\u00a0especially in customer service or with people who are involved in the military.<\/p>\n<p>For some of you it might seem strange or even a little rude to call your manager or your boss with\u00a0their first name. You might \u00a0want to refer to your boss as\u00a0<strong><b>boss<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>like<strong><b>:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><\/i><em><i>Good morning boss!<\/i><\/em><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i><em><i>Can I help you with that boss?<\/i><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But to many English natives, this would feel a little strange. They usually\u00a0feel more comfortable if you just refer to them by their first name.<\/p>\n<p>Now the trick is when someone introduces themselves to you, you \u00a0need to listen to the name that they use. They\u00a0are\u00a0informing\u00a0you how to address them. The most respectful thing that you can do is to call anyone is with\u00a0the name that they have offered to you because if you choose to call them something else because you think that&#8217;s more respectful, it&#8217;s kind of showing disrespect by not calling them what they want to be called.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>Respectful phrases<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><b>1.\u00a0<\/b><strong><b>Excuse me<\/b><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong><b>Excuse me<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0is one of the most commonly used respectful phrase in\u00a0English. When you want to show someone respect, this phrase is crucial. It&#8217;s always awkward to interrupt someone when they&#8217;re talking\u00a0or maybe when they\u00a0are\u00a0doing something else especially when you&#8217;re speaking\u00a0to your\u00a0superior at work.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it\u00a0becomes necessary to interrupt\u00a0and the most respectful way to do this is to say:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><b><i>Excuse me,<\/i><\/b><\/em><\/strong><em><i>\u00a0I<\/i><\/em><em><i>\u00a0am so<\/i><\/em><em><i>\u00a0sorry to interrupt. Would you <\/i><\/em><em><i>please <\/i><\/em><em><i>mind helping me\u2026?<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also the best\u00a0way to ask someone to\u00a0move out of the way.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><b><i>Excuse me,<\/i><\/b><\/em><\/strong><em><i>\u00a0would you mind if I get past?<\/i><\/em><em><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<h4><b>2.\u00a0<\/b><strong><b>Please and <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>T<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>hank <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>Y<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>ou<\/b><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It might seem simple but\u00a0<strong><b>please\u00a0and thank you<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0are important\u00a0too. English speakers know that as a child this was one of the first\u00a0things that they\u00a0were taught.\u00a0Every English speaking parents are\u00a0adamant that their kids are\u00a0always saying please and thank you when they\u00a0wanted something. They would make sure that their kids\u00a0wouldn&#8217;t get it without those words.<\/p>\n<p>In some other languages, these words are\u00a0not as important as they are in English.\u00a0<strong><b>Please<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><b>thank you<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0the most important expressions\u00a0in English when you are trying to show respect.
