The past participle usually starts with ge- and ends in either -t or -en.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how it looks in real life:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Ich habe einen film gesehen<\/em> (I saw a movie &#8211; roughly translated, that&#8217;s &#8220;I have a movie seen.&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li><em>Wir sind nach Berlin gefahren<\/em> (we travelled to Berlin &#8211; &#8220;We are to Berlin travelled.&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regular verbs follow a fairly straightforward pattern. Irregular verbs on the other hand are just something you have to memorise &#8211; there&#8217;s no getting around it .<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Modal Verbs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Modal verbs essentially change the meaning of your main verb. They tell you if something needs to happen or is allowed, possible or actually wanted.<\/p>\n<p>There are six of these modal verbs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>k\u00f6nnen (can)<\/li>\n<li>m\u00fcssen (has to \/ must)<\/li>\n<li>d\u00fcrfen (may)<\/li>\n<li>sollen (should)<\/li>\n<li>wollen (want to)<\/li>\n<li>m\u00f6gen (like to)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Du musst p\u00fcnktlich kommen<\/em> (You absolutely have to turn up on time.)<\/li>\n<li><em>Sie darf heute fr\u00fcher gehen<\/em> (She&#8217;s allowed to leave early today.)<\/li>\n<li><em>Ich will einen Kaffee<\/em> (I want a cup of coffee.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The modal verb takes second place in the sentence. And the main verb gets moved to the very end in its basic form.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Separable Verbs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Some German verbs come with a little prefix that likes to wander off in the wild. This prefix sticks with the verb in the dictionary , but when you&#8217;re speaking naturally, it peels off and goes to the end of the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Check this out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>aufstehen<\/em> (to get out of bed) \u2192 <em>Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf<\/em> (I get up at 7 AM.)<\/li>\n<li><em>einkaufen<\/em> (to go shopping) \u2192 <em>Sie kauft im Supermarkt ein<\/em> (She shops at the supermarket.)<\/li>\n<li><em>anrufen<\/em> (to ring someone) \u2192 <em>Er ruft seine Mutter an<\/em> (He rings his mother.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This prefix completely changes the meaning. Just standing alone ( stehe ) means to stand. But its opposite (aufstehen) means to get up. So you&#8217;ve got to just remember each pair as two different words.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dative Case<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>German has four cases in total. You learned about two of these at A1 &#8211; nominative is for the subject and accusative is for the direct object. Now it&#8217;s time to tackle the dative case for the indirect object &#8211; the person who&#8217;s receiving something.<\/p>\n<p>The article changes its shape in the dative:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>der (masculine) becomes dem<\/li>\n<li>die (feminine) becomes der<\/li>\n<li>das (neuter) becomes dem<\/li>\n<li>die (plural) becomes den (and the noun gets an extra -n)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Take a look at this sentence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch<\/em> (I give the book to the man.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here the book is the direct object (accusative), while the man is the indirect object (dative). The change might feel a bit strange at first, but with practice, you get used to it.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Reflexive Verbs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Reflexive verbs are about doing something to yourself. You wash yourself. You get interested in something. You feel something.<\/p>\n<p>Most reflexive verbs need a little sidekick &#8211; mich, dich, sich, uns, or euch.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Ich wasche mich<\/em> (I wash myself.)<\/li>\n<li><em>Er interessiert sich f\u00fcr Musik<\/em> (He gets interested in music.)<\/li>\n<li><em>Wir treffen uns um acht<\/em> (We meet each other at eight.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many daily verbs in German work this way. They feel odd to English speakers at first. But after a few weeks, they start to feel normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Comparisons<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Comparing two things is not always a straightforward affair. Just adding an &#8220;-er&#8221; to an adjective only gets you halfway there. Then you need to use the word <em>als<\/em> (than) to hook them together.<\/p>\n<p>For most adjectives, this works a treat &#8211; just add the &#8220;-er&#8221; bit and:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>schnell<\/em> (fast) \u2192 <em>schneller<\/em> (faster)<\/li>\n<li><em>gro\u00df<\/em> (big) \u2192 <em>gr\u00f6\u00dfer<\/em> (bigger \u2013 and remember to add that umlaut there)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But then there are the odd ones out which require a spot of memorisation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>gut<\/em> (good) \u2192 <em>besser<\/em> (better)<\/li>\n<li><em>gern<\/em> (gladly) \u2192 <em>lieber<\/em> (rather)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And once you&#8217;ve got the hang of that, a full comparison should start to look a bit like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Mein Bruder ist gr\u00f6\u00dfer als ich.<\/em> (My brother is taller than me &#8211; note that one needs a bit of context sometimes)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Subordinate Clauses &#8211; The Secret to Smooth Sentences<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A subordinate clause is a bit of a sentence that&#8217;s not quite up to standing on its own. It needs the main sentence to prop it up , so to speak. No, it&#8217;s all about the things you actually hear yourself talking about when you&#8217;re out and about.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Vocabulary Topics &#8211; What You&#8217;ll Actually Use<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Shopping &amp; Money \u2013 You need to be able to talk about prices, sizes, returns and whatnot. So, you&#8217;ll learn words like <em>der Preis<\/em> (price) and <em>die Gr\u00f6\u00dfe<\/em> (size) and how to say you want to <em>umtauschen<\/em> (exchange) something.<\/p>\n<p>Health &amp; Body \u2013 Describing how you feel to the doctor or pharmacist, so you&#8217;ll need words like <em>der Kopf<\/em> (head) and <em>weh tun<\/em> (to hurt). You might need to say &#8220;My back hurts&#8221; or &#8220;I feel dizzy&#8221; &#8211; so you&#8217;ll want to learn those words.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Routines \u2013 Talking about your morning to night, so you&#8217;ll need to learn words like <em>Aufwachen<\/em> (wake up) and <em>fr\u00fchst\u00fccken<\/em> (eat breakfast) and <em>schlafen<\/em> (sleep) and all that.<\/p>\n<p>Food &amp; Ordering \u2013 then you&#8217;re on to menus and ordering &#8211; so you need words like <em>die Speisekarte<\/em> (menu) and <em>die Vorspeise<\/em> (starter) and all that.<\/p>\n<p>A solid A2 learner can pick up about 1,200 to 1,500 active words &#8211; which is just enough to have a good old chat about your day and even read short bits of text.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Skills_You_Develop_at_A2_Level\"><\/span><b>Skills You Develop at A2 Level<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The CEFR tells us what language you can actually <em>get by doing<\/em>. What changes at A2 is that you can start handling basic social dealings without turning into a nervous wreck. You can go into a store and ask for something. You can order a meal with a special request &#8211; like no onions, please. You can even tell someone about your weekend. Sure, you&#8217;ll still make mistakes, but the other person will actually understand you.<\/p>\n<p>Listening \u2013 When speech is being spoken clearly and at a snails pace on topics you know well, you can follow along pretty easily. You can even get the gist of what someone is saying in a train station announcement if it&#8217;s not going a million miles an hour. You can even figure out what someone is trying to tell you over the phone if it&#8217;s not too long a message. Native speakers no longer sound like a wall of noise to you.<\/p>\n<p>Reading \u2013 You can read through short, simple texts without freaking out and needing to check the words every two seconds. A menu, an email from a friend, a bus schedule or a classified ad for a second hand bike &#8211; no problem. You may need to whip out a dictionary a few times, but you can still manage it.<\/p>\n<p>Writing \u2013 You can knock out short personal messages that make some kind of sense. You can fill out a hotel form with your details and the dates you&#8217;ll be there, or write a postcard or a short email about your vacation. Your grammar may not be perfect, but the other person will still get what you&#8217;re trying to say.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"German_A2_Exam_Pattern\"><\/span><strong>German A2 Exam Pattern<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Two familiar names \u2013 Goethe-Institut and TELC &#8211; both offer A2 exams, and they pretty much follow the same guidelines from the CEFR. The exam all in all has four separate parts.<\/p>\n<p>Listening (about 30 minutes) \u2013 You&#8217;ll get to listen to short announcements, dialogues, and interviews. You might have to match what you hear to pictures, check whether certain statements are true or false, or even just fill in some missing words.<\/p>\n<p>Reading (about 30 minutes) \u2013 There&#8217;ll be signs, emails, ads and short newspaper articles to get through. Questions on these parts will check whether you can find specific information, work out the main point, or even just guess a word from the way it&#8217;s used in the text.<\/p>\n<p>Writing (about 30 minutes) \u2013 You&#8217;ll only have to knock out one short message &#8211; usually around 40 to 50 words. This is usually going to be a personal email or letter.
