Each band gives you a pretty clear idea of where your English skills sit. Band 9 makes you someone who is basically an expert with the language, and Band 5 would mean you have a basic level of English. Your aim is to get yourself to Band 7.

How the scoring really works (0–9 band)

There is a band scale in the IELTS Reading exam which ranges from zero to nine. With each band, there is a good description of your level of proficiency in English. If you are in Band 9, then you will be considered an English language expert while Band 5 will be considered basic English. The goal is to achieve Band 7.

How the scoring really works (0–9 band)

Scoring is straightforward, one point per each correct answer. Simple as that. You’ve got 40 questions to answer. Your raw score gets converted into a band score. For example, if you get 35 or 36 questions right, that’ll give you a Band 8. If you get 23 to 26 right, you’ll probably get a Band 6.

What you need to aim for to get a Band 7 (approx. 30–32 correct answers out of 40)

To get a Band 7 in the Academic Reading test, you’re looking at needing around 30-32 answers right. For the General Training Reading test, the requirements are a bit tougher. You’ll probably need to get 34 to 35 answers right.

What you need to aim for to get a Band 7 (approx. 30–32 correct answers out of 40)

To get a Band 7 in the Academic Reading test, you’re looking at needing around 30-32 answers right. They do fine reading in everyday life but still can’t quite get the hang of the IELTS Reading test. You can probably guess why – here are the four biggest stumbling blocks.

Poor time management: the test taker’s nemesis

That means that you have one minute per question, plus the additional time to write your answers on the answer sheets. As many students do, you might find yourself using up 30 minutes for answering the questions based on the first passage only.

A lack of vocabulary – and word power – holds you back

These texts will contain difficult words such as technical words or low frequency words that you may not be used to seeing. Unless you have an adequate level of vocabulary knowledge, you won’t know what these words mean.

Reading every word instead of scanning – a recipe for disaster

This may be the most prevalent mistake made by candidates. Candidates approach the IELTS Reading module the way they would an exam at school and attempt to read each and every word from beginning to end. They think that they must comprehend everything in order to take notes.

Panic sets in – and that’s when the wheels come off

You see a piece of text that is simply too difficult for you – the topic is unfamiliar and so many new words have been used that you don’t know where to start. Many students will panic in such situations – they get all excited and confused and cannot move forward.

Proven Strategies to Get a Band 7 in IELTS Reading

These strategies aren’t just ideas – they’re actually methods used by people who’ve scored highly on the test. Give them a go and see the difference.

Master two key skills: skimming and scanning

They’re two different things, but they’re both essential if you want to do well on the test. They’ll save you a ton of time and help you find the answers you need.

Skimming for the main idea

Skimming is all about reading super fast to get the general idea of what the passage is about. You don’t need to read every word, just the title, headings and the first sentence of each paragraph. You’re looking for names, dates and numbers – that sort of thing.

Scanning for keywords

Scanning, on the other hand, is all about looking for specific information. You’re moving your eyes quickly down the page, searching for a word, a name or a number. When you find it, you stop reading and take a closer look.

Don’t Read the Entire Passage

This is the most important rule of IELTS Reading. Do not read the whole passage. It is a waste of time. You will run out of time. You will score lower.

Focus on questions first

Look at the questions before you read the passage. Underline the keywords from the questions. Keywords can be names, dates, places, or special words. Words such as “the” and “and” are not keywords. When you know what the questions are, you will know what to search for.

Locate answers smartly

Go to the passage and scan for your keywords. When you find a keyword, read the sentence around it. That sentence usually contains the answer. You do not need to read the rest of the passage. This method works for most question types. It saves you at least 20 minutes per test.

Improve Vocabulary Strategically

You do not need to learn 10,000 new words. You need to learn the right words. And you need to learn synonyms.

Learn synonyms (very important for IELTS)

Synonyms are always the IELTS’ favorite. Words in questions will never be the same words in texts. They are synonyms. Like for example in the question there is the word “buy” while in the text it is “purchase.” It is important to understand that both these words mean the same thing.

Practice with context

Do not memorize word lists. That does not work well. Instead, learn words from real passages. Read a Cambridge IELTS passage. Underline words you do not know. Look up their meaning. Then check the passage again. This is called learning in context. Your brain remembers words better this way.

Practice Time Management

You have 60 minutes for 40 questions. You also need to transfer answers to the answer sheet. That takes about 5 minutes. So you really have 55 minutes for reading and answering.

20 minutes per passage

Give an equal share to each passage. Give 20 minutes to Passage 1. Give 20 minutes to Passage 2. Give 20 minutes to Passage 3. Passage 1 is the least difficult one. It should be completed within 15 minutes. The remaining extra 5 minutes can be utilized for Passage 3.

Avoid spending too long on one question

Certain questions are definitely more difficult than others. Should you not be able to get the correct answer within 1 minute of thinking, then try to take a wild guess and mark the question. Then continue working on other sections of the test. It is very important that you do not waste your time on any single question.

Understand Question Types

IELTS Reading has many question types. Each type needs a different method. Here are the three most common.

True/False/Not Given

This type causes the most confusion. True means the passage says the same thing as the statement. False means the passage says the opposite. Not Given means the passage does not talk about this information at all. Many students choose False when the answer is Not Given. To avoid this mistake, ask yourself a simple question. Does the passage say this? If yes, it is True. Does the passage say the opposite? If yes, it is False. If the passage does not mention it at all, it is Not Given.

Matching headings

You get a list of headings. You must match each paragraph to the correct heading. Do not read the whole paragraph first. Read the first sentence of the paragraph. Then read the last sentence. These two sentences usually contain the main idea. Match based on those sentences. Only read the middle of the paragraph if you are unsure.

Sentence completion

You get a sentence with a gap. You must complete the gap using words from the passage. Read the instructions carefully. They will tell you how many words to use. It might be “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS.” If you use three words, your answer is wrong even if the meaning is correct. Copy the words exactly from the passage. Do not change the form of the word.

Avoid Common Traps

The test makers put traps in the test. They want you to make mistakes. Here is how to avoid the biggest traps.

Similar words are not the correct answer

The test will put a word from the question in the passage. But the meaning will be different. For example, the question says “the temperature increased.” The passage uses the word “temperature” but says “the temperature decreased.”

Not Given confusion

You already learned about Not Given. But here is an extra tip. If you find information that is similar but not exactly the same, check carefully. Does the passage confirm the statement? Does it deny the statement? If it does neither, the answer is Not Given.

Overthinking answers

The answer is always in the passage. You do not need to use logic or common sense. You do not need to think about what the author probably meant. You only need to find the sentence that contains the answer. If you are thinking too much, you are doing it wrong. Stop thinking and start scanning.

Daily Practice Plan to Reach Band 7

You cannot get Band 7 without practice. But you do not need to practice for 5 hours every day. A smart plan is better than a long plan.

30 to 60 minutes reading practice

Practice for 30 to 60 minutes every day. That is enough. If you practice for longer, you will get tired. You will not learn well. Short daily sessions are more effective than long weekly sessions.

Solve 1 passage daily

Do not solve a full test every day. That is too much. Instead, solve one passage. Spend 20 minutes on it. Answer the questions. Then spend the next 20 minutes checking your answers. This focused practice will improve your skills faster than doing full tests.

Analyze mistakes

This is the most important part of practice. Many students just check their score and move on. That is a waste of time. You must analyze every mistake. Ask yourself three questions. Why did I get this wrong? Was it a vocabulary problem? They use real past tests. The question style is exactly what you will see on test day. Start with Cambridge 10 and work your way to the newest book. Avoid them.

Reading slowly

Slow reading is the enemy of Band 7. You have to read fast. You can read fast with practice, and also without a habit of reading every word. You can trust your eyes to search for the keywords you are looking for, so move quickly.

Ignoring instructions

There are different instructions for each type of question. Some say, “choose two letters.” Others say, “write no more than three words.” You will lose points if you do not follow the instructions. Read the instructions for each question. Do not assume you know the answers.

Not reviewing answers

After you finish a practice test, review your answers. This is not optional. The review is where the learning happens. Without review, you will make the same mistakes again.

Quick Tips to Boost Your Score Fast

Try these tips and you’ll see a difference in a matter of days.

Underline keywords

Use your pencil to highlight the keywords in the questions. This focuses your mind on what is important. It also helps you remember what you are looking for.

Stay calm during the test

Nervousness slows you down. Take a deep breath before you start. If you feel panicky during a passage, close your eyes for 5 seconds. Remember that you practiced for this. You know the strategies. You will be fine.

Guess intelligently if unsure

Always leave a question blank. There is no penalty for wrong answers. If you do not know the answer, guess. But guess well. Study the question and eliminate any obvious wrong answers. Then select the best answer from the rest. A smart guess is better than a random guess.

Check out Entri’s free IELTS courses!!

Conclusion

How to score Band 7 on IELTS Reading isn’t about being a perfect English reader.
