Here’s why:

Helps with Balance and Stability

Your core is your body’s in the middle – the spot where gravity is pulling you down. When you’re standing, walking or running your core muscles are working overtime to keep you upright. And if you don’t have strong enough core muscles you’re going to be way more likely to trip and fall.

Having a strong core though helps you stay steady on your feet in any direction – even if some big guy comes barreling towards you. It also means you can recover from a stumble without going down and losing your balance. It’s even going to make you feel more sure of yourself when you’re moving around.

Helps with Posture

We all know someone who has to slouch a bit to see over the top of the desk, or who pays the price for spending all day sitting at a desk. When you slouch on your spine you’re putting it through the wringer and that can lead to back, neck and shoulder pain.

A strong core though helps support your spine so you can sit and stand up straight and easy. It pulls your shoulders back and keeps your head nice and lined up on top of your body. And let’s not forget that good posture is not only going to make you look and feel a whole lot better but it’s going to help prevent pain in the long run.

Boosts Athletic Performance

Your core is the glue that holds everything together when you’re running, lifting or throwing a ball. When you’re running your core helps keep your pelvis stable so you can keep on going. When you’re lifting weights it protects your spine from getting damaged. And when you’re throwing a ball it generates a lot of the power you need – so you can knock that ball right out of the park.

The thing is, every single athletic movement involves your core to some extent – because your core is the bridge between your upper and lower body. And if you don’t have a strong core – you’re just asking for trouble.

Helps with Everyday Stuff

You’re probably one of those people who use their core without ever even thinking about it. Picking up the kids, carrying groceries, getting out of a chair – all of these things require good core strength.

But when you do have a strong core – they’re all a lot easier. Your back doesn’t have to work as hard and you’re less likely to get hurt while you’re doing them.

Become a General Fitness Trainer and turn your passion into a Profession!

Four Exercises to Get You Started on Building Your Core

These four exercises are pretty safe, pretty effective and don’t require any fancy equipment. Do these and you’ll be ready to move on to more complicated stuff in no time.

Plank

The plank is probably the best core exercise you can do – it teaches you how to keep your core muscles braced while still keeping your spine nice and straight.

How to do it: Place your forearms on the floor with your elbows right under your shoulders. Then just walk your feet back until you’re in a straight line from head to heels. Squeeze your bum and pull your abs in tight and hold for 20 to 60 seconds. Stand up, take a breather and then do it all over again three times.

Common mistakes: Letting your bum sag, raising your hips, or forgetting to breathe while you’re doing it.

The Bird Dog

The bird dog is a great way to help improve your core stability and co-ordination. It puts your balance to the test while at the same time keeping your spine stable.

How to do it: Start in the usual position on all fours. Then just stick your right arm out in front of you and your left leg back at the same time. Keep your hips level and your core muscles tight for 2 to 3 seconds. Then just go on back to the start and do it with your other arm and leg. Do ten reps on each side.

Common mistakes: Rotating your hips, arching your back or rushing through the movement.

Dead Bug

The Dead Bug exercise is tailor made to help you get a handle on core stability while moving your arms and legs, all at the same time. If you’ve got back pain, this is an exercise you should definitely be doing.

How to do it:
Get comfortable on your back with your arms stretched out above your head and your knees bent at a right angle to the ground. Press your lower back firmly into the floor – you want to feel it engaging. Now slowly lower your right arm and left leg down towards the ground, stop just before your back starts to arch. Don’t let your lower back lift off the floor – that’s a big no-no. Return to the start position and switch sides. Do 10 reps on each side.

Common mistakes people make: They tend to rush through the movement, but you want to go slow and controlled. And let’s be honest, who can blame you for wanting to get it over with, but don’t let your lower back lift off the floor.

Glute Bridge

The Glute Bridge exercise is a real powerhouse for strengthening your glutes, hamstrings, and lower back all at the same time – it’s also a great core exerciser. It provides support for your entire core area.

How to do it:
Get comfortable on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor in front of you. Now, as you press through your heels and lift your hips up towards the ceiling, try to squeeze those glutes at the top for a couple of seconds. Then lower yourself back down again and repeat. Do 15 reps.

Common mistakes to watch out for: People tend to push through their toes, which puts too much strain on their lower back. And some folks end up hyperextending their lower back – not good. And to top it all off, they forget to squeeze those glutes at the top of the movement.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DO CORE EXERCISES?

Your core muscles ,they recover pretty quickly, so they can handle more frequent training than some of the bigger muscle groups. Just train your core 2-4 times a week, with good form and controlled movements.

Try to avoid common mistakes like holding your breath, slouching your lower back, and only ever doing crunches. And don’t be afraid to progress gradually by adding more reps, increasing hold time, or just trying harder variations.
