At Larsen &amp; Toubro, for example, a Quantity Surveyor does on average \u20b9102,597 a month, while a Planning Engineer is on about \u20b9107,161 a month. But over at Sobha Limited the figures are a bit more mixed &#8211; a Quantity Surveyor is on about \u20b925,358 a month and a Planning Engineer is on \u20b916,476, though we should note the numbers are pretty small.<\/p>\n<p>AmbitionBox&#8217;s got a bit more data &#8211; they reckon professionals with both a Quantity Surveyor and a Planning Engineer type title earn somewhere between \u20b93.3-3.6 LPA at the 1-3 year mark, and then rise to \u20b99.1-10 LPA at 9-12 years . And then of course you&#8217;ve got Glassdoor&#8217;s listings for Planning Engineer salaries, which can range from \u20b915,000 right up to \u20b960,000 per month, depending on your experience level.<\/p>\n<p>Career growth is a bit different for the two roles, too. A QS can move up to Senior QS, Cost Manager, or Commercial Manager, while a Planner can move up to Senior Planner, Planning Manager, or Project Controls Manager. Both roles can eventually lead to project management or consultancy, but they follow different paths.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_the_roles_overlap_Switching_between_them\"><\/span><strong>Where the roles overlap &amp; Switching between them<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It turns out the roles actually overlap a fair bit more than people think. They both work with drawings, both understand construction sequences, and both make contributions to project control. You see smaller companies where one person handles both roles.<\/p>\n<p>Switching between the two is possible, but it does take some effort. If you&#8217;re a QS moving into Planning, you&#8217;ll need to learn up on scheduling software and critical path logic. And if you&#8217;re a Planner moving into QS, you&#8217;ll need to learn about measurement, contract conditions, and commercial procedures. The construction knowledge you&#8217;ve got will transfer across pretty easily &#8211; just be aware the tools and specific skills you need don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Some people of course do go out of their way to build up both sets of skills. And yeah, having a combined QS-Planning profile can be super valuable on projects where cost and time are super tight. And if you love systems and coordination, then Planning is the way to go.<\/p>\n<p>The salary figures are pretty comparable, and the career growth is strong in both. Ultimately it comes down to personality and what kind of problem you want to solve every day. Do you want to make sure the project is profitable? Go for QS. Do you want to make sure the project is on time? Go for Planning.<\/p>\n<p>Neither role is actually better than the other &#8211; they&#8217;re both vital. The construction industry needs both.
