& cable sizing are the twin foundation skills that every Electrical Engineer needs to have under their belt. Load calculation dictates just how much power a system will need, while cable sizing tells you which wire will be able to safely carry that power. Get either wrong & you’re literally playing with fire – risks of overheating, voltage drops, nuisance tripping, or even a full-blown blaze loom large. This guide is going to walk you through both for beginners, step by step, with a worked example.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Load calculation always comes first. Work out the connected loads, then factor in the demand and diversity factors – that’s how you arrive at the design current.

It’s not just about current capacity when it comes to cable sizing. You also need to give serious consideration to voltage drop and short-circuit withstand when sizing out your cable.

Derating factors matter a lot. The fact that the cable has to operate in 45-50C heat all day- especially during India’s sweltering summer months can really take a chunk out of your cable’s capacity.

Voltage drop is often the limiting factor on long runs. Just because a cable appears to have the right current capacity doesn’t mean it will pass the 5% voltage drop test.

Use the right standard. In India, that means following the IS 732:2019 standard (based on IEC 60364-5-52) for cable sizing.

ELECTRICAL LOAD CALCULATION IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE

Load calculation always starts with a pretty simple question: how much power will the installation draw? The answer determines a lot of other things – service size, feeder size, and protective device ratings.

First things first – make a list of every connected load. When it comes to a home, that means lights, fans, air conditioners, fridges, and all the other appliances you can think of. For an office or commercial building, it’s all about the lights, receptacles, HVAC, pumps, and any other equipment you have.

Connected load is the total wattage if everything were running at once – but in reality, nothing ever runs at once; that’s where demand factors and diversity factors come in. A demand factor is basically the percentage of a load that is expected to be working at the same time – for example – not all the lights in a large building are on at the same time – so that’s your demand factor, and then there’s the diversity factor which is the inverse concept, ie the ratio of the maximum demand to the connected load.

For Indian domestic installations, IS 732 Annex A has some handy diversity factors to help you size the service – and for commercial buildings, NEC Article 220 has some in-depth demand factors for lighting, receptacles, and appliances.

Join our MEP Course Online and Build a Successful Career!

HOW TO CALCULATE ELECTRICAL LOAD, STEP BY STEP

Step 1: List all loads. Walk through the building and record every appliance and fixture. These are some good habits to get into – they will serve you for years to come.

MEP Engineering Careers in Data Centres: HVAC, Power, Fire Protection

How Civil/MEP Engineers Can Break into Data Centre Construction: Skills Checklist

MEP Engineers in GCCs: Opportunities Beyond Site Execution Roles

MEP Engineer Salary in India 2026 (Latest Update)

Mep Engineer Salary in Germany

MEP Engineer Salary in Chennai 2026: Freshers to Experienced

ANSWER Electrical load calculation & cable sizing are the twin foundation skills that every Electrical Engineer needs to have under their belt.
