Not exactly in the way you might think if you’ve only worked in software development. DevOps is more full of scripting, automation and configuration – the kind of code that makes systems work smoothly, rather than making new features work. A DevOps engineer writes code all the time, but its not the long code slivers you see in software development. Instead its all about short scripts, pipeline definitions and infrastructure files – the kind of code that gets the job done quietly in the background.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

DevOps is more about scripting than its application development cousin. Most of your coding will be Python, Bash, and YAML to keep infrastructure running smoothly. DevOps is not full of coding in the way that software development is. You wont be spending all day writing app features, debugging UI logic or designing new APIs. But DevOps is most definitely full of code – just a very different kind of code.

You will be writing shell scripts to automate server tasks. You will be writing Python to talk to cloud APIs. You will be writing YAML to set CI/CD pipelines in motion. You will be writing HCL to configure infrastructure from scratch with Terraform. The code is shorter, more functional and more focused on making the system tick than on making new features happen.

I think part of the confusion around DevOps comes down to a myth – that it is just about sitting at a desk clicking buttons and running scripts. That is just not true. DevOps requires real technical depth – you just need to think about the right kind of depth to have. It is not about being a software engineer, its about being a systems engineer.

Kickstart your career in DevOps with Entri. These are short little bits of code that replace all the manual work you would normally do. They might clean up old docker images, sort out some logs or check the status of a service. Pyton and Bash are the most common languages here and most of these scripts are under 100 lines, theyre designed to solve a very specific problem.

Pipeline definitions. You define your CI/CD pipelines in code, usually in YAML. So you might have a Jenkinsfile or a GitHub Actions workflow file that describes what to do with your app – build, test, deploy – in a very structured way thats got logic and conditions built in.

Infrastructure as Code. Tools like Terraform use HCL to define servers, networks and databases. Ansible uses YAML playbooks to configure the systems. This stuff is not “real programming” in the way we normally think of it, but it needs an understanding of some pretty basic concepts like variables, loops and conditionals.

What you do not do is write the application that runs on the infrastructure. That is the developer’s job. The DevOps engineer builds the roads; the developer builds the cars. Both require technical skill, but the skills are different.

WHICH PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES DO PEOPLE USE IN DEVOPS?

The programming languages of DevOps are all about getting the job done, not just theory.

Python is the top choice – it’s used for all sorts of things like automating cloud stuff, integrating APIs and building tools that make life easier for ops teams. Plus, it’s super readable, has libraries for just about everything and is the go-to scripting language for loads of infrastructure teams.

Bash is a given on Linux – shell scripting is how you get around on servers, manage files and string commands together. Every DevOps engineer needs to be at least okay with Bash scripting, even if they don’t become experts.

PowerShell is the Windows and Azure equivalent – if you work in a Windows shop, you’ll be needing PowerShell to get the job done.

YAML isn’t actually a programming language – but you’ll still use it every day. Kubernetes manifests, CI/CD pipelines and Ansible playbooks are all written in YAML – it’s a format for laying out configuration, not a full language with logic.

HCL is Terraform’s own special configuration language – it describes the infrastructure resources, variables and dependencies you need. It’s all about telling Terraform what you want, and it figures out how to get it done.

You don’t need to be a master of all of these – start off with Python and Bash, and add YAML in when you get to Kubernetes, and HCL when you get to Terraform.

Kickstart your career in DevOps with Entri. But you won’t become a DevOps engineer without learning to write code.

Beginners should start with the basics of Linux – get to know the command line, file permissions, processes and networking – then learn about Git and version control – and after that, take a stab at basic Bash scripting. Then it’s on to Python.

A support engineer with no coding background managed to switch to DevOps in just 12 months by learning Linux, Git, networking, Docker, Jenkins and Terraform, and building projects on GitHub. That’s definitely possible – but it took deliberate effort to get good at scripting and automation.

The problem is people often think that DevOps doesn’t require any coding at all. It’s actually less coding than software development, but still requires consistent coding to automate stuff. You can’t automate without writing automation code.

WHAT DO DEVOPS ENGINEERS DO DAY-TO-DAY?

A typical day for a DevOps engineer is a mix of coding and systems work.

They might start off by glancing over the monitoring dashboards to see if everything is healthy and if there were any alerts over night. Then they might write a script to sort out a recurring problem – like a log filling up too fast or a deployment that needs a manual step automated. After that they might go and update the CI/CD pipeline to add in a security scan, or then spend their time troubleshooting a failed deployment, digging through logs and tracing network paths.

It’s not just a case of sitting at a code editor all day – DevOps engineers are constantly moving between terminals, dashboards, config files and docs. The code they write is just a tool to solve operational problems, not the actual product itself.

DEVOPS VS SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT: WHICH ONE REQUIRES MORE CODING?

Software development requires way more coding – devs are writing hundreds of lines of application code a day, designing data models, building APIs, implementing business logic and writing unit tests – their output is the product.

DevOps engineers write less code, but it is more varied. Automate small tasks at first – don’t try to build applications. Scripting is all about automating the mundane.

Step 5: Learn the basics of cloud computing.

Choose a provider – AWS, Azure, or GCP – and get a solid understanding of the core services: compute, storage, networking and identity.

Step 6: Learn Docker and Kubernetes.

These are the standard tools of the trade for deploying applications. It’s a different type of coding – practical, not academic – all about making things happen rather than just writing code for the sake of it.

The coding you do will be about getting things done fast and reliably. If you want to become a DevOps engineer, don’t try to avoid coding altogether. Learn just enough to automate. Start with Python and Bash and then add in YAML and HCL as and when you need them. Just remember, building projects, documenting them and getting hands on is the key to this – its demanding but it’s learnable.

Join Big Tech companies with Entri’s Courses Now!

Full-Stack Web Developer

Data Science

Python Programming

Software Testing

DevOps

Data Analytics

Cyber Security

UI/UX Design

SAP FICO Course

AI-Powered Practical Accounting Course

Is DevOps full of coding?
