The constitution\u00a0 adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949. It became effective on 26 January 1950. <sup id=\"cite_ref-law_min_intro_13-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The constitution replaced the\u00a0Government of India Act 1935\u00a0as the country&#8217;s fundamental governing document, and the\u00a0Dominion of India\u00a0became the Republic of India.\u00a0The Indian constitution is the world&#8217;s longest for a sovereign nation. <sup id=\"cite_ref-Yugoslavian_constitution_7-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-:2_8-25\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_9-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_10-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>At its enactment, it had 395 articles\u00a0 with 22 parts and 8 schedules.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:3_22-13\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> It is the second-longest active constitution after the Constitution of Alabama in the world with about 145,000 words, i. <sup id=\"cite_ref-43\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The constitution has a preamble and 470 articles, <sup id=\"cite_ref-prashant_44-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-:5_18-13\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>which are grouped into 25 parts. <sup id=\"cite_ref-Parts_45-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-:5_18-14\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>With 12 schedules<sup id=\"cite_ref-Schedules_46-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-:5_18-15\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> and five appendices,\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-:5_18-16\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-47\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>it has been amended 104 times. The latest amendment became effective on 14 January 2019. This later became the Preamble of the Constitution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>22 January 1947<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Objective resolution unanimously adopted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>22 July 1947<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>National flag\u00a0 was adopted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>15 August 1947<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Achieved independence. India split into the\u00a0Dominion of India\u00a0and the\u00a0Dominion of Pakistan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>29 August 1947: <\/strong>Drafting Committee appointed with\u00a0 R. Ambedkar\u00a0as its Chairman.\u00a0The other 6 members of committee were Munshi,\u00a0Muhammed Sadulla,\u00a0Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer,\u00a0N. Gopalaswami Ayyangar, Khaitan and Mitter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>16 July 1948<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Along with\u00a0Harendra Coomar Mookerjee,\u00a0 T. Krishnamachari\u00a0was also elected as second vice-president of Constituent Assembly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>26 November 1949: <\/strong>The Constitution of India was passed and adopted by the assembly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>24 January 1950: <\/strong>Last meeting of Constituent Assembly. The Constitution was signed and accepted with 395 Articles, 8 Schedules, 22 Parts<\/li>\n<li><strong>26 January 1950:<\/strong>The Constitution came into force.
