This day is celebrated to generate consciousness of hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, which also helps in raising funds and attract volunteers for the WFH. Its celebration started in the year 1989 and is held annually. April 17 was chosen in honor of Frank Schnabel’s birthday who was the founder of WFH in 1963. In this article, we will discuss World Haemophilia Day 2022 – April 17.

World Federation of Hemophilia

The World Federation of Hemophilia or WFH is an international non-profit organization. They work to improve the lives of people with hemophilia and other genetic bleeding disorders. It educates hemophiliacs and works to improve their medical treatment. 75 percent of people in the world with bleeding disorders are unable to receive adequate treatment. The WFH has member organizations in 113 countries and is officially recognized by the World Health Organization.

Click Here to Attempt Free Mock Tests for various Government Exams !!!

What is Haemophilia?

Haemophilia is a group of inherited genetic disorders that damage the body’s ability to control blood clotting or coagulation, which is helps in stopping the bleeding when a blood vessel breaks. Haemophilia A is the most common form of the Hemophilia, present in about 1 in 5,000 – 10,000 male births. Haemophilia B is found to be 1 in about 20,000 – 34,000 male births.

Types of Haemophilia

Hemophilia is of two forms. Each form is linked to a low level of a certain clotting factor. Hemophilia A is the more common and is associated with low levels of clotting factor VIII. Hemophilia B is rarer and is coupled with low levels of clotting factor IX. The disorder type is diagnosed by taking a blood sample and testing the levels of clotting factor VIII or IX.

Each type of hemophilia causes extended bleeding which is the main symptom of hemophilia. Bleeding can vary from mild to severe. Bleeding is often internal, although people can also bleed externally.

Other symptoms include impulsive bleeding, bleeding into the muscles or joints, bleeding for a lengthened period after having surgery, having a cut or dental work, and big bruises. In very mild cases, bleeding may be for a shorter duration and only occur subsequent to injury or surgery.

In severe cases, bleeding is spontaneous, with no obvious cause and is more frequent (around one to two times a week). In severe cases, bleeding may go into the joints and muscles of the body. Further symptoms may include, swelling, pain, and stiffness, and ache or problems using the muscle or joint. Repetitive bleeding into a joint may also lead to arthritis.

Left untreated, severe cases of hemophilia can lead to an early death. However, there are successful treatment options available, and if managed, people with hemophilia are largely unaffected by this condition living full and healthy lives. Treatments for hemophilia involve injecting the missing clotting factor into the bloodstream.

World Haemophilia Day 2022: Theme

This year, the theme of the day is ‘Access for All: Partnership. According to the World Federation of Hemophilia, about 1 in every 1000 people has a bleeding disorder; many are left untreated. The aim of this day is to raise awareness about hemophilia and increase the availability of treatments for this condition around the globe.

The slogan for this day is ‘Close The Gap’, which reflects the dissimilarity in treatments available to people living in different parts of the globe.
