This incident, known as the Haymarket Affair, became a pivotal moment in the history of the labor movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"1404\">The brutality of the incident shocked the world and brought global attention to the plight of workers. In response to the Haymarket tragedy and in solidarity with laborers worldwide, socialist and communist groups began to push for a day to honor workers&#8217; rights. In 1889, the First Congress of the Second International was held in Paris, where French socialist Raymond Lavigne proposed that May 1 be observed annually with international demonstrations. The proposal aimed to unite workers in their fight for better conditions and to commemorate the sacrifices made in the struggle for labor rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1406\" data-end=\"1968\">By 1891, at the Second Congress of the Second International, May 1 was officially adopted as International Labour Day. The day quickly gained recognition across countries in Europe and beyond. Over the decades, it evolved into a globally observed event, symbolizing solidarity among workers and advocating for social and economic reforms.
