What Is DAX Syntax in Power BI?<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

DAX syntax is the set of rules for writing a valid DAX expression in Power BI: a name, an equals sign, a function call with parentheses, and Table[Column] references for any fields involved. It looks similar to an Excel formula but is built to operate across whole tables rather than single cells.<\/p>\n

Anatomy of a DAX Formula<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n
    \n
  • Name and equals sign \u2014 e.g. Total Sales =<\/li>\n
  • Function name followed by parentheses \u2014 e.g. SUM(…)<\/li>\n
  • Table and column reference in square brackets \u2014 Table[Column]<\/li>\n
  • Commas separate arguments inside a function, not semicolons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Common DAX Syntax Rules<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

    • Table names containing spaces are wrapped in single quotes, e.g. ‘Date Table'[Date]<\/li>\n
    • Text values are wrapped in double quotes, e.g. “West”<\/li>\n
    • Comments use \/\/ for a single line or \/* *\/ for a block<\/li>\n
    • DAX is not case-sensitive, but uppercase function names (SUM, not sum) is the standard convention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
