What Is a Croqui?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A croqui is a simple sketch of the human body used in fashion illustration \u2014 usually drawn as a fast, expressive figure that shows off garment design and style. It functions as a template for illustrating clothes: rather than designing directly onto a blank page, a designer sketches garments onto a croqui, which already has the proportions of a human body worked out in advance.<\/p>\n

This matters practically, not just artistically. When designing a garment, croquis help a designer understand how a dress will actually look on a human figure, and using them consistently helps develop a real fashion sense and sense of proportion over time \u2014 skills that transfer directly into how convincingly a final design reads on an actual body.<\/p>\n

The 8-Head Theory<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The basic proportion of the human body in fashion illustration is explained using the 8-head theory: from head to toe, the body’s height is divided into 8 equal parts, each equal to the height of the head. Fashion figures are drawn based on this proportion, using the head as a built-in unit of measurement for the rest of the body.<\/p>\n

In practice, this means a designer picks a single ‘head unit’ length \u2014 for example, 1\u00bc inch \u2014 and then divides the whole figure’s height into 8 equal parts vertically, using that unit. Horizontal guideline divisions are also marked at these levels, giving the designer a consistent grid for placing shoulders, waist, hips, and other key body landmarksaccurately, every time.<\/p>\n

8-Head vs 10-Head Figures<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To make fashion drawings more attractive and dynamic, both 8-head and 10-head fashion figures are used in practice. The 10-head figure is especially used for more stylised fashion illustration \u2014 elongating the figure beyond realistic human proportions to create the more dramatic, elegant look associated with fashion sketches (as opposed to anatomically accurate figure drawing, where 8 heads is the standard).<\/p>\n

Approximate Body-Part Measurements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once the head unit and overall height are set, a croqui also relies on a set of approximate width measurements for different parts of the body, keeping the figure’s proportions consistent and believable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Croqui in Practice<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In a typical fashion illustration course, four standard croqui variations are practised: the 8-head blocked figure (basic proportional blocks, no detail), the 8-head fleshed croqui (the blocked figure refined into a more realistic outline), and the corresponding 10-head blocked figure and 10-head fleshed figure for stylised illustration work. Moving from ‘blocked’ to ‘fleshed’ is really the same progression as moving from a rough proportion grid to a finished, illustration-ready figure \u2014 the blocked version establishes where everything goes, and the fleshed version is what a designer actually draws garments onto.<\/p>\n
