Several factors influence this development, and understanding them explains why identical parenting or teaching rarely produces identical outcomes.

Factor

How It Shapes Development

Hereditary Factors

Genetic endowments transmitted from parents to child. Physical traits (height, weight, eye colour) and psychological traits (intelligence, personality, creativity) are innately determined — the genetic code is the base on which brain and body grow.

Environmental Factors

The wide range of stimuli in a child’s surroundings provides the necessary input and experience for development. An enriched environment produces different outcomes than a deprived one — even inherited talent (e.g., musical ability) may not develop without proper environment and support.

Home Environment

Builds a child’s self-concept and prepares them for the external world, through interaction with parents and family. A supportive, warm home fosters normal development; unsupportive or stressful homes can produce maladjustment.

Cultural Factors

Culture — beliefs, attitudes, and values transmitted across generations — shapes socialisation. Behavioural norms (e.g., how people greet each other) differ across cultures, and children absorb their own culture’s customs and standards.

Socioeconomic Status (SES)

Determined by parental education, occupation, and income. Low-SES children may face malnutrition and reduced knowledge access; high-SES children generally get better social opportunities, nutrition, medical care, and intellectual stimulation.

Normative Influences

Biological or environmental influences that affect most people in a group similarly — e.g., sexual maturity, starting school around age 6, or shared events like floods and famines. Non-normative influences are unusual individual life events, like the early death of a parent.

Education and Training

Every child has innate abilities that need identification and nurturing. Without proper identification and adequate opportunity, innate ability may never develop — making education and training a direct influence on development.

The Role of Parents and Teachers

School, teachers, and parents all play a vital role in a child’s holistic development. Parents are the child’s first mentor; the teacher is the second — and both carry immense responsibility in shaping the child’s personality.

Role of Parents

Parents are the child’s first role model — children behave, react, and imitate the same way their parents do. Parents encourage and motivate their children to learn, and good parental support helps a child become a positive, healthy, lifelong learner. Children acquire skills earliest when parents are responsive and understanding.

Role of Teachers

A teacher’s major challenge is to nurture children’s learning and give them varied experiences to face the wider world, moulding the child into a responsible, independent learner. The teacher is often the first person from whom a child learns social skills in a school setting. An open-minded, well-balanced, planned teacher has real power to bring positive change to a child’s development — and as the child gains mastery in different skills, the teacher becomes a genuine guide in nurturing their interest and independence.

Teacher-Parent Relationship

Trust and mutual understanding between parent and teacher is a real secret to a child’s happy learning. Support and cooperation from parents toward the teacher helps enormously in understanding and working toward the child’s needs — and remarkable positive change is seen in a

child when parents and teacher work hand in hand. A good parent-teacher relationship leads a child to feel positive about attending school.

Family as the First Social Group

Family is the child’s first social group — the place where the child begins interacting, learning about relationships, feelings, responses, and expressions. Since humans aren’t born knowing how to behave in society, learning starts with the family at home. Five main factors have been identified as contributing to growth and development in early childhood:

Nutrition

Parents’ behaviours

Parenting (style and practice)

Social and cultural practices

Environment

Children learn in many ways — sometimes by being told directly, but most commonly by observing everyday life. Because family is the child’s primary social group, a child’slearning and socialisation are shaped, above everything else, by their family.

Why Children Develop Differently Children differ from each other in memory, reasoning, thinking ability, and more — not all children have the same type of intelligence either; some have more musical talent, others more linguistic or intrapersonal ability.
