Physical Development

Physical development covers changes in size, shape, and physical maturity — including physical abilities and coordination. It’s the most readily visible developmental domain, which is why parents notice height, weight, and the development of fine and gross motor skills first. Interestingly, exploration and movement don’t just result from physical development — they actively stimulate brain development, including neurogenesis (growth of new brain cells) and synaptogenesis (formation of new connections between brain cells).

2. Intellectual (Cognitive) Development

Cognitive development is the growth of a child’s ability to think and reason — how they organise their minds, ideas, and thoughts to make sense of the world. It’s tied directly to the physical growth of the brain, and covers the learning and use of language, reasoning ability, problem-solving, and organising ideas.

3. Social Development

Social development is the process by which a child learns to interact with others, developing individuality within their community while gaining the skills to communicate and process others’ actions — most visibly in how a child builds friendships and handles peer conflict. Healthy social development delivers benefits that ripple into other developmental areas:

Develops language skills — interacting with other children creates more chances to practise speech, and better communication in turn improves social interaction, forming a positive cycle.

Builds self-esteem — friendships provide exciting, affirming experiences, and difficulty making friends can be genuinely painful for a child.

Strengthens learning skills — healthy peer relationships support adjustment to school settings; children who struggle with peers as early as preschool are more likely to face later academic difficulty.

Improves conflict resolution — stronger self-esteem and better language skills together improve a child’s ability to resolve differences with peers.

Establishes a positive attitude — which, in turn, builds better relationships and higher self-confidence.

4. Emotional Development

Emotional development means a state of being ‘moved’ from one stage to another. It shows up outwardly in language and expression, and inwardly involves three connected qualities: feeling (jubilation, depression, anger, fear), impulse (an urge toward action — to hit, to run, to seek and prolong pleasure), and awareness (perceiving what produces the emotion — joy, boredom, laughter, anxiety, hostility).

5. Language Development

Language development covers the changes that let a child communicate, including the development of reading and writing. Children understand their native language long before they can speak it, and language development follows a fairly consistent sequence:

Stage

What It Looks Like

Crying and cooing

The earliest stage of language development.

Babbling

Repetition of consonant/vowel combinations (e.g., ‘gagaga’, ‘mememe’) and imitation of sounds.

First words

Simple words like ‘baba’ or ‘dada’.

Holophrases

Single words used to express a complete thought — ‘water’ might mean ‘I want water.’

Telegraphic speech

An abbreviated version of adult speech, dropping non-essential words.

Context-specific language

Full, mature language use, including words with more than one meaning depending on context.

A Sixth Area: Moral Development

Alongside the five areas above, moral development is also worth naming: the growing understanding of right and wrong, and the resulting change in behaviour — sometimes simply called conscience. It connects directly back to Kohlberg’s theory from Topic 3, since Kohlberg’s six stages are really a detailed account of how this specific area of development unfolds.

Five Interconnected Areas Human development happens across five distinct areas — and although each is described separately here, they constantly influence one another, as you’ll see especially in the discussion of social development below. 1.
