The answer is yes because the elastic recoil is inversely related to lung compliance.This phenomenon occurs because of the elastin fibers in the connective tissue of the lungs, and because of the surface tension of the film of fluid that lines the alveoli.When this pressure is lower than the pressure of alveoli they tend to expand.

So is it like, the nicotine coating on the alveolar walls due to smoking loses it's elastic property so that its ability to take in oxygen is affected?
