Q. Which of the following is the elephant training centre in Ernakulam?
Solution:
Kodanad is set on the southern banks of the Periyar river near Perumbavoor and was one of the largest elephant training, and rescue centers of Kerala. Earlier elephants captured from the Malayatoor forests (the forests in the east and north of Kodanad) were trained here. In 1977 the elephant capturing came to an end, but the elephant-training center are still in function. Kodanad then was primarily used as a rescue training center, and houses baby elephants at their infancy and various stages of their growth. At least four to six baby elephants were brought in and trained every year.
Kodanad is currently the headquarters of Malayatoor forest division. Kodanad elephant training center is now rehabilitating all the animals except elephants, from there to Kaprikkad which is two kilometers away from the current location. The new mini-zoo, Abhayaranyam is spread over 200 acres of the forest area in which 100 acres are meant only for elephants.
