Kasaragod became part of Kannur district following the reorganization of states and formation of Kerala on November 1, 1956. Kasaragod was declared as a district on 24 May 1984. Kasargod district is one of the rare districts in India which houses as many as 7 different languages (excluding dialects and tribal languages), with each spoken by a substantial number of people.
