A glume is a bract below a spikelet in the inflorescence of grasses.
Each spikelet has a very short axis called rachilla on which bracts or glumes are arranged in two vertical rows.
The lowest two glumes are sterile and the upper glumes are fertile.
The fertile bract or glume is called the lemma.
