- Temporary hardness is caused by dissolved bicarbonate minerals (calcium bicarbonates and magnesium bicarbonates) which can be removed by boiling.
- Permanent hardness is caused by dissolved chlorides, nitrates and sulphates of calcium and magnesium(which is not removed by boiling).
