Q. The jockey pulley or idler pulley is fitted

A
Near the driver pulley on the tension side of the belt
B
Near the driven pulley on the tension side of the belt
C
Near the driver pulley on the slack side of the belt
D
Near the driven pulley on the slack side of the belt
Solution:

In power transmission of belts, pulleys can be classified into two types

  1. fast pulley – pulley mounted and keyed to the shaft
  2. Idler pulley or loose pulley – Pulley mounted on shaft free to rotate on shaft.

i. The diameter of the loose pulley is slightly less than that of the fast pulley so that when the belt is shifted on to the loose pulley, its tension is reduced.

ii. Loose pulley takes care of the idling time of the machine and does not transmit any power.
