Q. A single phase motor:

A
Requires only one winding
B
Can rotate in one direction only
C
Is not self starting
D
Is self starting
Solution:

A single phase motor is not self starting because the single phase supply to the stator field produces an alternating flux. This produces forward and backward torque that are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction. Hence it is not self starting.
