Article 1 of the Constitution states that India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States. The territory of India shall consist of: The territories of the states, The Union territories and Any territory that may be acquired. The names of the States and the Unions have been described in the First Schedule.

The name India is derived from the river Sindhu which flows in the north-west of the country. The Greeks used to call us Indoi meaning the people of the Indus. BHARAT etymology: The name Bharat is derived from the legendary king Bharat who was the ancestor of Kauravas and Pandavas; son of King Dushyanta and Shakuntala.
