Rabindranath Tagore

• Rabindrabhanath Tagore was born at Calcutta in West Bengal as the son of Mahrshi Devendranath Tagore and Sarada devi.
• One of Rabindrabhanath Tagore’s brothers, Satyendranth Tagore was the first Indian to get selected for the ICS in 1864.
• In 1901, Tagore established a school at Shanti Nikethan which finally devolped into the world famous University of ViswaBharthi in 1921.
• In 1912 Tagore Published Jana Gana Mana ( Now India’s national anthem)
• The national anthem is composed in the Raga,’Sankarabharanam”.
• The English translation of the national anthem is ” The morning song of India”
• In 1913,Tagore’s Gitanjali was selected for the Nobel Prize for liteature.
• Tagore also wrote the national anthem of Bangladesh ‘ Amar Sonar Bengala ‘
• In 1915, Tagore was awarded Knighthood by the British Monarch George V,but he surrenderd it in 1919 as a protest aganist the Jallianwallabagh Massacre.
