Ashtamudi Lake in Kollam district is the second largest lake in Kerala with deep watershed habitat. This large palm-shaped reservoir is located just behind the Vembanad Lake.
Ashtamudi means eight branches. The lake is also known as the gateway to the fresh water lakes of Kerala.
The Ashtamudi Watershed is one of the most important watersheds of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on the Conservation of Watersheds and their Balanced Use.
To the right of the lake is the historic port city of Kollam. The biggest train accident seen in Kerala, the Peruman tragedy took place at Ashtamudi Lake. The tragedy of July 8, 1988 killed 107 people.
