Why Textiles Matter

Clothing, food, and shelter are the basic needs of human beings, and textiles occupy an important place in the life of civilized humans — from birth to death, people live with the help of clothing and textiles. Today, life without textiles is genuinely unimaginable. Beyond body protection, temperature regulation, attractiveness, and home decoration, textiles now show up in automobile industries (tyre cords, seat covers, carpets), heavy industries (conveyor belts), environmental protection (geotextiles), and medicine (surgical cotton, artificial organs).

This wide reach is relatively new. The history of clothing started with primitive humans using tree bark and stitched leaves; today, fibres such as cotton, silk, wool, nylon, and polyester are used to make yarn, and fabrics are produced from these yarns. Scientific progress has also allowed existing fabrics to be improved — cotton, for example, once wrinkled easily and needed starching, but chemical treatments now reduce that defect and improve appearance and usefulness. Alongside improving old fabrics, science has also produced entirely new ones: fibres are often blended in fixed proportions to create new commercial fabrics, such as terrycot (cotton + terylene) and terrywool.

Selecting a textile properly is only half the job — it also needs to be handled and cared for correctly to get good service from it, since different fabrics have different characteristics that call for different handling. In India specifically, weaving, dyeing, stitching, and decorating fabrics have long been traditional occupations and a means of livelihood. Textile manufacture itself runs through several stages — fibre production, spinning, yarn preparation, and weaving — and today’s fabric-forming methods mainly come down to weaving, knitting, and felting.

What Is a Textile Fibre?

Textile fibres are very fine, flexible strands whose length is much greater than their diameter — they are the basic units used for producing yarns and fabrics. Some fibres have been in use since the earliest stages of human civilization; others are recent, since scientists continuously discover and test new synthetic fibres, and some of these gain permanent commercial importance because of their special properties.

The Three Categories of Textile Fibres

Textile fibres generally divide into three groups, and understanding this three-way split is the foundation for everything else in this module:

  • Natural fibres — obtained directly from plants and animals; these are the fibres humans have used since ancient times.
  • Man-made (semi-synthetic) fibres — produced by artificially improving the form and properties of natural substances such as cellulose and proteins.
  • Synthetic fibres — not found in nature at all; produced through chemical reactions involving elements such as carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen, giving them special properties not found in natural or man-made fibres, which is why their use keeps increasing.

A quick note on terminology: some sources combine man-made and synthetic fibres into a single umbrella group and call all of it ‘man-made fibres’ — in that scheme, the first type becomes ‘semi-synthetic fibres’ and the second ‘synthetic fibres’. Both terms are used interchangeably across textile literature, so it’s worth being comfortable with either framing.

Zooming in on natural fibres specifically, they split further by which kingdom they come from: plant fibres (also called vegetable fibres) such as cotton, linen, and jute; and animal fibres such as silk and wool. Semi-synthetic fibres include viscose rayon, acetate rayon, and cuprammonium rayon, while synthetic fibres include nylon, polyester, acrylic, and spandex.
