Getting a Design onto Fabric
Before embroidery can begin, the chosen design has to be drawn out and then transferred onto the fabric. Two families of materials make this possible: drawing materials, used to create and refine the design on paper, and transfer materials, used to move that finished design onto the cloth itself.
Transfer Materials

Colour choice for carbon paper is worth committing to memory, since using the wrong colour risks permanently marking the fabric: light colours (yellow) for light fabric, dark colours (white/red) for dark fabric — and black or blue avoided altogether because they tend to spread.
Drawing Materials
Once the design itself needs to be drawn, sketched, or held in place, a second set of tools comes into play:

Pencil grade is the detail most worth remembering here: softer grades (B, 2B) suit freehand learning and sketching, HB is your straight-line workhorse, and the harder grades (H, 2H) are for final, precise design lines that need to stay crisp through the transfer process. Notice, too, how the two material families connect in practice: cartridge paper (a transfer material) is where the pencil (a drawing material) does its work, and the drawing pins and drawing board hold everything — tracing paper, carbon paper, fabric — steady while the transfer itself happens.
Positioning the Design First
Before transferring anything, the design has to be positioned correctly relative to the fabric:
- For a design placed at the centre of the fabric: fold the fabric at its centre, fold the design at its centre, then match the two folds before transferring.
- For a design placed at a corner: fold both the fabric and the design at a 45° angle before transferring.
The Three Transfer Methods
Once positioning is settled, one of three methods is used to actually get the design onto the cloth.
Method 1 — Carbon Method
This is the quickest method, but not the best one, because carbon marks can remain on the fabric afterward.
- Place the fabric on the drawing board.
- Place carbon paper on the fabric with the carbon side facing down.
- Place the design paper on top and secure everything with pins.
- Trace the design lines with a pencil.
- Remove the pins, design paper, and carbon paper.
Method 2 — Pouncing Method
A traditional method, generally considered one of the easiest to execute well, and ideal when the same design needs to go onto many pieces of fabric.
Materials Needed
- Blanket pad
- Tracing paper
- Pricker
- Pounce powder
- Dabber
- Water colour paint
- Brush
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Place a blanket pad on the drawing board and lay the traced design paper over it.
- Use a pricker to make tiny holes all along the design lines.
- Spread the fabric smoothly, place the perforated tracing paper over it, and pin it securely.
- Dust charcoal powder or graphite powder (pounce powder) over the design.
- Use a dabber to press the powder through the holes and onto the fabric below.
- Remove the tracing paper — dotted impressions of the design will now be visible on the fabric.
- Join the dots using a brush and water colour paint (light paint on dark fabric, dark paint on light fabric) to complete the outline.
Keep the fabric completely still while you work — moving it can spread the powder and spoil the design. As a bonus, the perforated tracing paper can be stored and reused for future transfers, which is exactly why this method suits multi-piece production runs.
Method 3 — Direct Method
Best suited to thin, transparent fabric. The fabric is placed directly over the design paper and pinned securely in place, and the design is then copied straight through the fabric using a pencil.

A Special Case: Woollen Fabric
When transferring a design onto woollen fabric, both the fabric and the design should be folded at a 45° angle before the transfer — the same corner-fold approach used for corner placements generally, applied here specifically because of how woollen fabric behaves.
