What is Surface Ornamentation?
Surface ornamentation refers to any technique used to decorate the surface of a fabric or garment so that it becomes more visually appealing. People have been ornamenting their clothing since the very beginning of clothing itself — decoration is not a modern add-on to fashion, it is as old as fashion.
Ornamentation can be introduced at more than one stage of textile production. During the weaving stage itself, designers create attractive effects simply by using different coloured yarns in the warp (lengthwise threads) and weft (crosswise threads), which produces woven-in patterns without any extra embellishment step. After the fabric is woven, its beauty is further enhanced through dyeing and printing — processes that add colour and pattern to the surface of finished cloth.
