The Six Elements of Design
1. Colour
Why Colour Matters First
Colour is an important element of nature and design β it makes life attractive and meaningful, and in clothing specifically, colour is the first factor that attracts attention, ahead of cut, texture, or anything else. Colours influence mood and emotion, creating feelings of warmth or coolness, which is exactly why correct colour combination is so important in fashion illustration. Colour selection itself depends on several personal factors: figure, hair, skin tone, season or occasion, and personality.
The Three Dimensions of Colour
Colour theory breaks colour down into three separate dimensions, and understanding all three is what lets a designer describe and control colour precisely, rather than just reacting to it intuitively.

| Hue | The name of a colour. When light reflects off an object, the object absorbs some wavelengths and reflects others β that reflected wavelength is what produces the colour, or hue, we see. |
| Value | The lightness or darkness of a colour, depending on how much white or black has been added. Adding white produces a tint; adding black produces a shade; mixing black and white together (grey) produces a tone. As value shifts, the colour’s apparent brightness changes. |
| Intensity | The brightness or dullness of a colour. Grey reduces intensity β mixing grey into a colour makes it duller, less vivid. |
The Colour Wheel
The colour wheel is the standard tool for understanding how colours relate to one another. It consists of 12 colours arranged in a circular format, organised into three categories: primary colours, secondary colours, and tertiary colours β each category built from the one before it.
Primary Colours
Red, Blue, and Yellow are the primary colours. They cannot be created by mixing other colours together, but they can be used to create every other colour on the wheel. Each carries its own strong associations: Red is strong and energetic, representing energy, courage, and strength, and is often associated with life, blood, and β in many cultures β luck and importance. Blue represents the sky and sea, symbolising peace, calmness, and stability. Yellow represents sunlight and happiness, symbolising joy and positivity, and is considered a sacred colour in some cultures.
Secondary Colours
When two primary colours are mixed in equal proportion, secondary colours are formed:

Tertiary colours are formed by mixing a primary colour with a secondary colour in different proportions, filling in the remaining six positions on the 12-colour wheel:

Put together, the 3 primaries + 3 secondaries + 6 tertiaries is exactly what makes up the standard 12-colour wheel mentioned at the start of this topic β every position on that wheel is now accounted for.
Warm Colours
Warm colours create a feeling of warmth, and in colour theory, they appear closer and more visually active than other colours. Red, orange, and yellow are the classic examples, associated with the sun, fire, and energy. Warm colours create energy, excitement, and positivity; they make objects appear larger; and they’re often used specifically to highlight or emphasise part of a design.
Cool Colours
Cool colours are mainly blue-based, associated with natural elements like the sky and sea. Blue, green, and violet shades fall into this category, representing calmness, peace, stability, and relaxation. Cool colours make objects appear smaller than they are, and are often used to create a soft or distant effect within a design β functionally, close to the opposite of what warm colours do.
Neutral Colours
Neutral colours lack strong chromatic intensity β white, black, grey, and shades of brown fall into this group. They’re widely used in fashion precisely because they balance out bright colours and match easily with other shades, acting as a kind of visual anchor that lets warm or cool accent colours stand out without clashing.
Colour Theory in Practice
Colour theory explains how colours relate to each other and how they can be combined in design β it covers not just picking colours, but creating visual harmony and real emotional impact. In practice, colour choice depends on skin tone, body structure, age, emotions, and occasion. As a general guideline, light colours tend to suit older people, while bright or cool colours are often preferred for younger people; colour selection also shifts naturally with the seasons and specific occasions.
Colour Schemes
A colour scheme is a planned combination of colours, and several standard schemes recur throughout fashion design:

Colour Relationships in Fashion
Colours are selected based on hue, value, and intensity together, and while there are no strict rules, harmony and balance remain the guiding goals. Fashion colour choices depend on body structure, skin complexion, age, and occasion β dark colours can reduce how large the body appears, while light colours increase visibility. Colour combinations shift with fashion trends too; specific named shades like Chinese blue or poison green are examples of how a single trend colour can capture a particular emotional or stylistic moment.
Selecting the Right Colour Scheme
- Personal colour preference is important, but not always sufficient on its own.
- Similar (analogous) colours are the easiest to combine successfully.
- Real knowledge of colour theory helps guide selection beyond just personal taste.
- Neutral colours like white, black, and brown are versatile and safe anchor choices.
- Bold colours should be used carefully, since they carry more visual weight.
- A balanced use of colour is, as a general rule, always better than an unbalanced one.
A Working Colour Glossary
A handful of terms recur throughout colour discussions and are worth keeping straight: colour emphasis means highlighting one colour among others; a colour scheme is a planned colour combination; a colourway is the specific colour combination used in a design presentation; earth tones are brown or red-based natural colours; half tone describes a gradual change of colour; saturation refers to the purity of a colour.
2. Shape
Shape and Space
Shape is the visible form of an object as viewed β in clothing, the outline of a garment creates what’s called a silhouette. Within any shape, two related concepts matter: positive space, which is the shape of the object itself, and negative space, which is the background area surrounding it. Silhouette plays a genuinely important role in fashion design, since it defines a garment’s outer appearance β often the very first thing an observer registers about a design, before any detail is examined.
3. Line
Lines and shapes are closely related: when lines are used together properly, figures and shapes become clear and visually attractive. Different line types β vertical, horizontal, zig-zag, curved, and others β are used to build form, and each gives a garment or design a distinctive appearance depending on direction and style.
4. Form
Where shape is essentially flat, form is three-dimensional, incorporating length, width, and depth together. A 2D representation includes only length and width, while a true 3D form adds depth on top of those two dimensions. Form is what helps a designer understand the real structure of a garment as it sits on an actual human body, rather than just as a flat sketch β the difference between drawing a dress and understanding how that dress will actually drape and move in three dimensions.
5. Light
Light gives shape and volume to objects, making parts of a figure more visible and creating contrast where needed. Light can highlight certain areas, create shadow effects, and generally enhance a design’s appearance. A concrete example: shiny fabrics reflect light very differently from matte fabrics, which is exactly why fabric choice and lighting effect are so closely linked in how a finished garment actually reads to the eye.
6. Texture
Texture refers to the surface quality of a fabric β something that can be felt by touch or seen visually, often both at once. Texture depends on several underlying factors: the fabric’s structure, the weaving method used to produce it, and processing techniques like spinning and finishing (the very techniques covered back in Modules 2 and 3 of this course). Different textures create different visual effects in fashion design, which is exactly why texture counts as a full element of design in its own right, not just an incidental property of whatever fabric happens to be on hand.
