An Overview of the CSIR NET Exam

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued the official notification for the submission of the application form to attend the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research National Eligibility Test (CSIR NET). The CSIR NET test is conducted twice a year to select the most eligible candidates for the Junior Research Fellowship. The CSIR NET is also used as the measuring tool to assess the worth of the candidates to recruit for the post of Assistant Professors in colleges and Universities in India.

The NTA has activated the application link from the 1st of May 2024. Candidates who wish to apply for the exam should register through the official portal before the given deadline.

The NTA conducts the CSIR NET exam both in June and December. The CSIR NET exam will be conducted online across the 225 centres in India. The CSIR NET is a national-level Computer Based Test(CBT). CSIR NET cut-off marks will be updated once the exam is over. The candidates can visit the official website to learn about the cut-off marks. The CSIR NET Exam cut-off will depend upon the number of seats/posts available, the difficulty level of the exam, the nature of the exam, and a number of candidates who applied along the previous year's cut-off.

The aspirants ought to clear the five papers in the CSIR NET exam which includes the subjects Life Science, Chemical Science, Earth Science, Physical Science and Mathematical Science. Eligibility Criteria
Candidates who wish to apply for the CSIR NET exam should check the eligibility criteria before applying for the exam. Those candidates who are unable to satisfy the prescribed eligibility criteria will be automatically rejected from the applicant list. Education

As per NTA, the educational qualification mandatory for the candidates applying for CSIR NET exam is as follows:

  • M.SC or equivalent degree/ Integrated BS-MS/ BS-4 years/BE/B. Tech/ B. Pharma/ MBBS from a recognised university with a minimum of 55% marks, applicable for the candidates belonging to the General/General-EWS and OBC category.
  • B.E/B.S/B.Tech./ B.Pharma/ MBBS final year students who are awaiting the results can only apply for the Junior Fellowship
  • Candidates belonging to the SC/ST/OBC/PwD/Third Gender category with a Master’s degree or equivalent with 50% of marks are eligible to apply for the test.
Age
The candidates who wish to apply for JRF must be at least 28 years old. For the post of Lecturer, there is no upper age limit. The candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PwD, Third gender category, women candidates can expect an age relaxation of up to 5 years. The candidates should submit the documents to prove their age at the time of the submission of the application form to avail of the relaxation.
Nationality
The aspirants who wish to attend the CSIR NET exam should be an Indian citizen.
Exam Pattern
CSIR NET Exam pattern is very crucial for those candidates who wish to clear the exam and secure JRF or Assistant professor post. The CSIR NET exam pattern will give you an idea about the nature and level of the exam. The candidates have to clear 5 papers. The question paper is divided into three parts, of which part A is common, General Aptitude questions. Parts B and C are subject-oriented, the questions will be asked from the subjects of their choice out of the five subjects.
