UPSC Prelims Exam Overview

The preliminary examination of the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission), which is the first Civil Service Examination in India, is held every year to test the candidates for the main examination. It consists of two compulsory papers: General Studies (Paper I) on current events, history, geography, politics, economics, environment, and general science, and Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT, Paper II) testing logic, logical reasoning, analytical ability, judgment, and basic mathematics. Candidates must have a bachelorโ€™s degree from a recognized university and meet age criteria, usually from 21 to 32, with relaxation for reserved categories.

  • It consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs). 
  • Prelims exam comprises Paper 1 and Paper 2.

For other services, a candidate must be either a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal/Bhutan a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

UPSC Prelims - FAQs

There are two papers in the IAS preliminary examination: GS Paper 1 and GS Paper 2 (CSAT). The maximum marks for each of these papers is 200 and the number of questions asked is 100 and 80, respectively.
To apply for the civil services exam, the applicant must possess a minimum of a Bachelorโ€™s degree in any discipline.
The UPSC prelims exam is conducted through offline mode, i.e., the pen and paper mode.
