Biosphere reserves are the areas that are protected to conserve the plants and animals. It also aims to reserve the traditional life of the tribal. To protect elephants and their habitat, the Government of India launched ‘Project Elephant’ in the year 1992. Our country has a total of 32 Elephant Reserves in India. Here is a list of elephant reserves in India.
Project Elephant
Project Elephant is a Centrally sponsored scheme launched by the Government of India in 1992. The aim of the project is to protect elephants and their habitat and corridor. It provides financial and technical support to the efforts taken by the States to manage the wild Asian elephant population. The Project also aims to support the research of the ecology and management of elephants, making the local people aware of the conservation, and providing care to the elephants.
The following States have implemented this Project:
Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh Jharkhand, Kerala, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
Objectives of ‘Project Elephant’

The following are the objectives of the Project:
- Ensuring welfare of domesticated elephants.
- Protection of elephants, their migration corridor and habitat.
- Prevention and mitigation of human-elephant conflict.
Activities under the Project
- Research on Elephant management related issues
- Public education and awareness programmes
- Eco-development
- Veterinary care
- Elephant Rehabilitation/Rescue Centers.
- Ecological restoration of existing natural habitats and migratory routes of elephants is builder.
- Development of scientific and planned management for conservation of elephant habitats and viable population of Wild Asiatic elephants in India
- Promotion of measures for mitigation of man-elephant conflict in crucial habitats and moderating pressures of human and domestic stock activities in crucial elephant habitats
- Strengthening of measures for the protection of Wild elephants from poachers and unnatural causes of death.
FACT: In 2010, Government of India declared Elephant as the country’s National Heritage Animal.
