Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen conferred with Spain’s top award in social sciences
- Indian economist and Nobel Laureate Amartya Kumar Sen have been conferred with the ‘ 2021 Princess of Asturias Award’ by Spain in the social sciences category on May 26, 2021.
- Princess of Asturias Awards is annual prizes awarded by the Princess of Asturias Foundation in Spain to individuals, entities, or organizations from around the world who make notable achievements in the sciences, humanities, and public affairs.
- The award comprises a cash prize of 50,000 Euros along with a Joan Miro sculpture representing and symbolizing the award, a diploma, an insignia.
Guillermo Lasso has sworn in as President of Ecuador
- The former banker, businessman, writer, and politician Guillermo Lasso has been appointed as the President of Ecuador.
- The 65-year-old took over as the 47th president of Ecuador on 24 May 2021.
- He replaces outgoing president Lenin Moreno.

Anatole Collinet Makosso takes charge as Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo
- The President of the Republic of the Congo, Denis Sassou-Nguesso, has appointed Anatole Collinet Makosso as the new prime minister of the country on May 26, 2021.
- The 56-year-old Makosso replaces Clement Mouamba who resigned on May 4, along with his entire government team.
- Prior to this, Makosso was the education minister of the Central African country since 2015.

Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy becomes first Indian to win Rudolf Schindler Award
- The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has honored India’s Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman, AIG Hospitals, with the prestigious Rudolf V Schindler Award, for his work in the field of endoscopy.
- Dr. Reddy is the first Indian medical practitioner to win this award.
- The Rudolf V Schindler Award is named after Dr. Schindler who is considered as “the father of gastroscopy. It is the highest category award in the Crystal Awards of ASGE.
- He received the Padma Shri award in 2002 and the Padma Bhushan award in 2016.
NASA & ISRO develop Earth System Observatory to address Climate Change with better Disaster Management
- The US space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is developing a new system called the Earth System Observatory, to mitigate efforts related to climate change and disaster mitigation.
- The Earth System Observatory will be a set of missions designed to study “designated observables” such as aerosols, clouds and weather, water supply, and the Earth’s surface and ecosystems, for an unprecedented understanding of the critical interactions between Earth’s atmosphere, land, ocean, and ice processes, which determines how the changing climate will play out at regional and local levels, on near and long-term time scales.
- NASA has also partnered with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) which will provide NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR).
- NISAR will carry two radar systems to measure changes in the Earth’s surface, during one of the observatory’s first missions intended as a pathfinder.
Shivshankar Menon authors book titled “India and Asian Geopolitics: The Past, Present”
- A new book titled “India and Asian Geopolitics: The Past, Present” has been released, which has been authored by Indian diplomat Shivshankar Menon, who was the former National Security Adviser of India under Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh (2010-2014).
- The book talks about the changes in Independent India’s foreign policy choices throughout its history, maps its present-day challenges, and analyzes how India’s policies are likely to evolve in response to new challenges.
- The book is published by Brookings Institution.
- Shivshankar Menon had previously served as the Foreign Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs from 01 October 2006 – 31 July 2009.
Aashritha V Olety becomes India’s first woman flight test engineer
- In yet another first for women in the Indian military, Aashritha V Olety, an officer of the Indian Air Force (IAF), has graduated from the Air Force Test Pilot School to become the first woman flight test engineer in the country.
- As a flight test engineer, Olety will be responsible for evaluating aircraft and airborne systems before their induction into the armed forces.
- Hailing from Karnataka, Olety is among only about 275 graduates who have ever cleared this Flight test course, since the course began in 1973.
- Olety was commissioned as a Flying Officer in the IAF in 2014.
India to host 2022 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup
- The 2022 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup will be hosted by India from October 11 to 30, 2022.
- Earlier this event was scheduled to be held in India in 2021, however, it was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
- It will be the second time that India will organize the global FIFA tournament after the FIFA under-17 World Cup in 2017, which also broke the record for being the most attended youth World Cup in FIFA’s history.
