Covid vaccination campaign for pregnant women in Kerala, “Mathrukavacham”
- The Kerala government’s campaign ‘Mathrukavacham’ to vaccinate all the pregnant women in the state against COVID-19 infection was inaugurated at the district level recently.
- Spot registrations for vaccination of pregnant women would be carried out at various government hospitals.
- Pregnant women can receive the COVID vaccine at any time during their pregnancy.
- The special vaccination drive comes as a strong defence to protect pregnant women.
India’s first ‘Grain ATM’ launched in Gurugram
- India’s first grain dispensing ATM has been installed at Farrukhnagar in the Gurugram district of Haryana under a pilot project, with the objective to make ration dispersal hassle and complaint-free for citizens.
- The machine is called an Automated, Multi Commodity, Grain Dispensing Machine.
- These Grain ATMS are being installed under the ‘World Food Programme’ of ‘United Nation’.
- The ‘Grain ATM’ is equipped with a biometric system with a touch screen, so that beneficiaries can use ration cards or fingerprints to use it.
India to host BWF Badminton World Championship in 2026
- The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has informed that India will host the BWF World Championships in 2026.
- Earlier, India was scheduled to organize the Sudirman Cup in 2023, but BWF decided to award the 2023 hosting rights to China.
- The Sudirman Cup is the world mixed team badminton championship which takes place every two years.

- Italy won the UEFA Euro 2020 final by defeating England, on penalties, following a 1–1 draw after extra time, at the Wembley Stadium in London on July 12, 2021.
- The Italians sealed a 3-2 win in the penalty shootout, to claim their second EURO title, (won the first title in 1968).

2022 Khelo India Youth Games to be held in Haryana
- The state government of Haryana will organize the Khelo India Youth Games 2021 in February 2022.
- Earlier the sports show was scheduled to be held from November 21 to December 5, 2021, but has been shifted due to the possible third wave of Covid-19 pandemic and keeping in mind that Khelo India Youth Games 2021 are to be held in the Under-18 category.
- Around 8,500 players will participate in the event of which 5,072 will be athletes, including 2,400 females and 2,672 males.
Syed Osman Azhar Maqsusi Wins UK Government’s Point of Light Award
- Syed Osman Azhar Maqsusi, a hunger activist from Hyderabad has won the prestigious Commonwealth Points of Light award.
- The Point of Light award is presented by the British government to recognize the outstanding individuals from the British Commonwealth countries who are making a change in their communities.
- The 41-year-old Maqsusi was honored for his path-breaking initiative called ‘Hunger has no religion’ through which he feeds around 1,500 people every day.
- The campaign was launched in 2011.
Abiy Ahmed has won second Five-Year term as Prime Minister of Ethiopia
- Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has won a second five-year term in office after his ruling ‘Prosperity Party’ won the country’s parliamentary election in a landslide victory.
- The Prosperity Party won 410 seats from 436 parliamentary electoral constituencies at the general elections on June 21, 2021.
- Abiy Ahmed is serving as the 4th Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia since 2 April 2018.
India’s first Cryptogamic Garden Inaugurated in Dehradun
- India’s first cryptogamic garden, with around 50 different species grown, has been inaugurated on July 11, 2021, in the Deoband area of Dehradun in Uttarakhand.
- The garden is situated at a height of 9,000 feet and is spread over an area of three acres.
- Cryptogams are non-seed-bearing plants. These primitive plants do not reproduce through seeds.
- For example algae, bryophytes (moss, liverworts), lichens, ferns, and fungi are the best-known groups of cryptogams that require moist conditions to survive.
Argentina beats Brazil 1-0 to Lift Copa America 2021
- Lionel Messi-led Argentina beat Neymar’s Brazil 1-0 to win the Copa America final match, held at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on July 10, 2021.
- With this win, Lionel Messi has secured his first major international trophy.
- The 2021 Copa America was the 47th edition of the annual international men’s football championship organized by South America’s football ruling body CONMEBOL.
- Earlier the tournament was scheduled to be held in July 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- It was the first time since 1991 that no guest nation took part in the tournament.
