Puri city of Odisha becomes first in India to provide 24×7 ‘safe to drink’ tap water facility
- Puri, in Odisha, has become the first city in India to implement the Drink-from-Tap project. The city now offers safe drinking water directly from the tap on 24 hours basis, through smart water management technology.
- Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the Sujal or ‘Drink From Tap’ mission in Puri on July 26, 2021.
- As a result of this, the people of Puri will receive high-quality drinking water directly from the tap.
- This means that there is no need to store or filter drinking water for cooking and drinking.
- The initiative will benefit around 2.5 lakh people of Puri along with 2 crore tourists coming to Puri every year.
Indore becomes the only Indian city to get selected for International Clean Air Catalyst Programme
- The Indore city of Madhya Pradesh, or the cleanest city of India, has become the only city from the country to be selected for the International Clean Air Catalyst Programme.
- Clean Air Catalyst is a new flagship programme launched by The US Agency for International Development (USAID) and a global consortium of organizations, led by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) to combat air pollution in low and middle-income countries by accelerating clean air solutions.
- The project will be operated for a period of five years to purify the air in the city with the cooperation of Indore Municipal Corporation and Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board.
12th INDRA NAVY Exercise between India & Russia held in Baltic Sea
- The 12th edition of the biennial bilateral maritime exercise INDRA NAVY, between the Indian Navy and the Russian Navy was held in the Baltic Sea from 28 to 29 July 2021.
- The Indian Navy was represented by the stealth Frigate INS Tabar.
- The Russian Federation Navy was represented by Corvettes RFS Zelyony Dol and RFS Odintsovo of the Baltic Fleet.
- INDRA NAVY was initiated in 2003.
Chinese shooter Yang Qian wins first gold medal of Tokyo Olympic Game
- China’s Yang Qian won the first gold medal of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by winning the 10m women’s air rifle event on July 24, 2021.
- The 21-year-old Yang won with an Olympic record score of 251.8.
- Russia’s Anastasiia Galashina stood second with 251.1 and Switzerland’s Nina Christencame third with a score of 230.6.
Serum Institute Chairman Cyrus Poonawalla wins Lokmanya Tilak National Award
- Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, Chairman of the Pune-based vaccine maker Serum Institute of India (SII), has been selected for the prestigious Lokmanya Tilak National Award for 2021.
- Mr. Poonawalla has been named for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic, by manufacturing the Covishield vaccine.
- He will receive the award on August 13. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs one lakh and a memento.
- The Lokmanya Tilak national award is given annually since 1983 on August 1, the death anniversary of Lokmanya Tilak, by the Lokmanya Tilak Trust. However this year the date has been changed due to the coronavirus situation.
Priya Malik wins Gold at 2021 World Cadet Wrestling Championship
- Indian Wrestler Priya Malik has won a Gold Medal at the 2021 World Cadet Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
- Malik defeated Kseniya Patapovich 5-0 in the summit clash of women’s 73kg weight category to win the yellow medal.
- The Indian team bagged as many as 13 medals, including 5 Golds at the Championship, to make the country proud.
Dholavira, the Harappan City in Gujarat inscribed as India’s 40th UNESCO World Heritage Site
- The historic Harappan City ‘Dholavira’ in the Rann of Kutchch, Gujarat has been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list on July 27, 2021, during the ongoing 44th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO.
- The site has been on UNESCO’s tentative list since 2014.
- Dholavira: a Harappan city, is one of the very few well preserved urban settlements in South Asia dating from the 3rd to mid-2nd millennium BCE.
Najib Mikati was elected as the new Lebanese Prime Minister
- Billionaire businessman Najib Mikati has been voted as the new prime minister of Lebanon in a Parliament election on July 26, 2021.
- The 65-year-old received 72 votes out of a total of 118 members of parliament.
- If Mikati successfully forms a government, this would be his third stint as Lebanon’s prime minister.
- Prior to this, Mikati had served as Prime Minister of Lebanon in 2005 and from 2011 to 2014.
Karnataka provide reservation for Transgender persons in Government jobs
- Karnataka has become the first state in India to reserve jobs in public employment in favour of transgender persons.
- As per the information, the state government has approved a 1% horizontal reservation for transgenders in government jobs.
- For this, the government has amended the Karnataka Civil Services (General Recruitment) Rules, 1977.
