Savitribai Phule is known to be the first female teacher of India. She was also a famous feminist. With the support of her husband Mahatma Jyothiba Phule, she had made many revolutionary steps to remove then prevailed social taboos against women and children. Early life and Marriage
Savitribai Phule was born in a village named Naigoan of Maharashtra on 3rd January 1831. As she had been born in a socially backward family, exactly in Mali Community, education for girls was prohibited. Like any other girl socially backward, she also had to get married at the age of 9 years. She married Jyothiba Phule. Jyothiba Phule was 13 years old at the time of marriage and he was studying in his 3rd class.
Savitribai, after marriage, found a bright way for her education as Jyothiba Phule was the man who was a very forward-thinking man. He believed strictly that education was a must factor for females to make eradicate social violence and inequalities. So he began to teach her even they had to witness strong opposition from their family. Savitribai had an incident in her life that one day when she was reading her English book, her father found it and throw it away and said not to touch it again. At that time only upper caste men were only allowed to do education. She vowed herself after that incident that she would learn to read and write at any cost.

Later in her life, Savitribai Phule got enrolled in a teacher training program in an institute in Pune. After that, she again went for another teacher training program at another school in Pune and also went to American missionary Cynthia Farrar in Ahmednagar. The girl who started her education after her marriage became a famous teacher and was first-ever known in India. She was the first woman headmistress in India.
Savitribhai became one of the famous revolutionary feminists when she started her teaching career. She started her career as a teacher in a girls’ school in Marathwada, Pune. As Jyothiba Phule was also a revolutionist, both together had started three different schools, only for girls in Pune. During her teaching career, she had faced many difficulties and attacks; even she had been stone pelted by upper-class people. The couple opened a center for rape victims and other vulnerable, called Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha. They altogether opened 18 schools. They also lead against casteism.
The couple had no children of their own and they adopted a son, named Yashwant. Later Yashwant started a clinic for bubonic plague victims. Savithri Phule died on March 10, 1897. As an honorary to her contributions, on her birthday 3rd January Maharashtra Government has decided to celebrate as ‘Savithri Utsav’ every year.
