The scheme was first founded on 1 June 2015. The interest rate for the PMAY scheme begins from 6.50% p.a. and can be availed for a term of up to 20 years. The last date for availing the PMAY CLSS or Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Low Income Group (LIG) categories has been extended to 31/03/ 2022. The applicant go to the official website and type in his name and other credentials to see if he is in the list or not.

Selection of Recipient under PMAY:
- The urban scheme takes care of mainly the housing requirements of the urban poor. It caters to the housing requirement of slum dwellers residing in confined areas of slums with inadequate infrastructure, poor sanitation and drinking facilities.
- Beneficiaries of PMA was Yogana – U mainly include MIGs or Middle Income Groups,LIGs or Low-income Groups and EWS or Economically Weaker Section.
- While the applicants from the Economically Weaker Section is eligible for complete help under the scheme, applicants from LIG and LIG categories are only eligible for the CLSS or Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme under PMAY.
- In order to be identified as a LIG or EWS beneficiary under the Scheme, the applicant is required to give an affirmation as income proof to the authority.

Types under PMAY Scheme:
There are two sub divisions of the PM Awas Yojana scheme which are divided based on the area on which they focus:
- Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin)
PMAY – G or The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin was previously known as the Indira Awas Yojana and was re named as PMAY-G in 2016. The scheme focuses at the planning of low cost and accessible housing units to eligible applicants from rural areas of India (excluding Chandigarh and Delhi). Under this scheme, the respective state governments and the Government of India share the cost of development of housing units in the ratio of 40:60 for plain regions and 10:90 for North-Eastern and hilly regions.
- Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban)
PMAY – U or The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban , as the name suggests, it focuses on the urban areas in the country. Presently, there are over four thousand cities and towns which are enrolled under this scheme.
The scheme functions under three different phases:
Phase 1: In Phase 1, the government focused to cover 100 cities in different states and Union Territories across the country from April 2015 to March. 2017.
Phase 2: In Phase 2, the government focused to cover 200 more cities in different states and Union Territories across the country from April 2017 to March 2019.
Phase 3: In Phase 3, the government focused to cover the cities which were left out in Phase 1 and Phase 2 and attain the target by the end of March 2022.
