Pan Nalin responded to the Oscars 2023 nomination with the following statement: “I never would have believed that such a day would arrive and usher in a celebration of light. Although “Chhello Show” has received support from all across the world, I was left wondering how I could get India to know about it. Now that I can breathe again, I believe in the power of entertaining, moving, and enlightening movies! Thank you, jury, and FFI.”
Meanwhile, internet users are arguing that the epic RRR, starring Ram Charan and Junior NTR, should have been nominated for an Oscar.
RRR can still be entered directly in all eligible categories, including Best Picture, according to a user who tweeted a meme straight from the Gangs of Wasseypur series. We didn’t receive any nominations for the international film category due to the FFI’s ignorance. from the west, a craze. The release in CHINA, JAPAN, and 28 additional nations will maintain our #RRRFor Oscars campaign.
The SS Rajamouli-directed movie’s opening scene was shared by reviewer and industry expert Sumit Kadel, who said, “This scene alone deserves an Oscar Award this year. Supporting RRR and praying for him. The spectacle that SS Rajamouli, Junior NTR, Ram Charan, and MM Keeravani collectively created, which made Indian film proud around the world, deserves an Oscar!

What is the selection process for Oscars?
1: Who was the first woman President of India?
The Gujarati and Indian film industries should undoubtedly rejoice, but this is only the beginning. The Best International Feature Film category, formerly known as Best Foreign Language Film, has a large selection of nominations, making it likely the most competitive (and potentially exclusive) category at the Oscars. Every movie is formally filed for a specific category in other Hollywood-dominated categories by the producer or distributor of the movie.
The Academy does not choose the nominees for the International Feature category. Each nation’s film/culture ministry or affiliated organizations submit the entries. Basically, each nation chooses one movie that came out during the qualifying time. After reviewing these selections further, the Academy’s jury created a 15-film shortlist, which was followed by a 5-film final list. India typically isn’t even included on the shortlist.
The Film Federation of India (FFI), the main organization of Indian producers, distributors, exhibitors, and studio owners, is responsible for choosing the nation’s official submission.

The “one submission from one country” and other flaws of the Oscars:
The official Oscar submissions from India aren’t usually well accepted. The folks who wanted RRR to be nominated for Chhello Show have been let down by the show itself. Some even advocated for India to pick The Kashmir Files. The selecting procedure, however, has flaws of its own. Every Jalikattu has a Gully Boy counterpart.
The former movie, India’s official Oscar entry for 2020, was praised for its technical and narrative accomplishments in Malayalam cinema and its capacity to compete with other major international productions. Gully Boy was selected a year earlier and, in contrast, although receiving positive reviews, functions as a standard Bollywood blockbuster.
A pattern between a crowd favourite and the FFI’s favorite has been observed. The conflict between RRR and Chhello Show is comparable to that in 2013, when Liar’s Dice rather than Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox, which was universally lauded within the international arthouse circles, was selected as India’s official submission.
Furthermore, it would seem unfair to choose only one movie as India’s finest of the year for a nation like India, which has a vast diversity in cinema, with movies being produced in at least 41 different languages each year.
Unsurprisingly, foreign films from the First World tend to receive greater press coverage and praise, and even in countries with a history of producing several Oscar winners, like France, the restriction to a single submission raises questions. Les Miserables, France’s official Oscar submission, made it to the final list of nominees. While Portrait of a Lady on Fire was not selected as the French nomination, many critics and fans of foreign cinema expressed disappointment about the decision, despite Les Miserables being a generally praised movie in and of itself.
So, is Best International Feature at the Oscars still relevant today?
The Best International Feature category is unquestionably constricting in its very fundamental ideas, with over 133 countries competing for just five nominations. However, the jury has diversified not only its own panel but even choices of nominees and winners as the Academy tries its best to limit public backlash in a post-MeToo era.
Since South Korea’s Parasite became the first non-English film to win Best Picture, there has been more opportunity for non-English selections to enter general categories. For instance, Japan’s Drive My Car was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay at this year’s Oscars. Therefore, even if Rajamouli’s blockbuster missed out on Best International Feature, there is still a potential that it will win in other categories like Best Picture (or a more specific category like Best Visual Effects to speak realistically).
In that regard, it is nonetheless worth mentioning how international voices are obtaining a somewhat improved likelihood of representation in traditional Hollywood-centric honors such as the Oscars.

Analyzing India’s nominations thus far: Are the Oscars unjustifiably harsh on India?
Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan are the only three Indian movies that have been nominated for Best International Feature to date. It’s a running joke that the Oscars favor stories about poor underdogs, especially those from the Third World. This is especially true for India’s own nominations as well as Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire.
Mother India is the arduous journey of an agricultural laborer who has to support her family while fending off greedy landowners. The Mehboob Khan directed film became a major blockbuster in India thanks to the ideal mother cliché portrayed by Nargis’ character. But as time goes on, it could appear a little bit out of date or excessive to contemporary viewers.
Then there is Salaam Bombay by Mira Nair. While Salaam Bombay may still be regarded as a masterpiece by some, more recent viewings have led some viewers to perceive it as a fetishized example of “poverty porn.”
Lagaan, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, became a box office success in India while giving producer and star Aamir Khan the freedom to play with with well-worn Bollywood clichés. The nomination of Lagaan demonstrated that even major box office successes can win Oscars. Even the ridiculously original premise—that the colonizers and the colonized would decide their fate over a game of cricket—was guaranteed to pique interest around the world.
But one can’t help but question if the 2002 Oscars jury, which was less diverse than the panel today, intentionally chose Lagaan because it was a good movie or because it adhered to their perception of what India should be: a scorchingly hot terrain dominated by half-naked guys playing cricket. Even though it is clear that the situation has changed as a result of even more diverse international tales being included on the short list, India has sadly never been able to regain a slot after Lagaan.
Could Chhello Show put a stop to this slump? By December, when the Academy typically reveals its selection of 15 candidates, that inquiry might have a solution. Chhello Show will be released in theaters on October 14 for Indian movie buffs who are excited to see it.
