Anandiben Patel took additional charge as MP’s Governor
- Anandiben Patel has been given additional charge as Governor of Madhya Pradesh during the absence of Governor Lal Ji Tandon.
- She is currently serving as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh from 2019.
- President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Anandiben Patel under Articles 155 and 160 of the Constitution.
Micheal Martin elected as the Prime Minister of Ireland
- Micheal Martin has been elected as the Prime Minister of Ireland by the Irish Lower House.
- Micheal Martin won the election by receiving 93 votes in favour, 63 votes against and 3 votes in abstention. He is the leader of the Fianna Fail party.
- Irish Lower House has 160 seats including the seat of the speaker who is generally not involved in the voting.
Extending the term of K.K. Venugopal as the Attorney General (AG) for one year
- The Union government strengthened its top legal team by extending the term of K.K. Venugopal as the Attorney General (AG) for one year, Tushar Mehta as the Solicitor General (SG) for three years and appointing six new Additional Solicitors General (ASGs) besides extending the tenure of five existing ASGs.
- The Attorney General for India is the Indian government’s chief legal advisor, and is primary lawyer in the Supreme Court of India.
- They can be said to be the advocates from the government’s side.
- They are appointed by the President of India on advice of the Union Cabinet under Article 76(1) of the Constitution and hold office during the pleasure of the President.
Nitin Menon included in ICC Elite Panel
- Nitin Menon has become the third Indian umpire to be included in the ICC’s Elite Panel of umpires.
- Ever since officiating in his maiden First Class match as a 28-year-old in 2011-12, Nitin has emerged as one of the most consistent umpires in Indian cricket.
- He has been inducted into the Elite Panel for the upcoming 2020-21 season. He has replaced England’s umpire Nigel Llong.
- Nitin Menon is the third Indian to make it to the prestigious panel after former captain Srinivas Venkatraghavan and Sundaram Ravi.
India and Bhutan have signed concession agreement on the 600 MW Kholongchhu Hydropower Project
- The Kholongchhu Hydro Energy Limited has been registered as a Joint Venture Company of SJVN (India) and DrukGreen (Bhutan) under the companies Act of Kingdom of Bhutan, 2000 on 12th June 2015 for the development of 600 MW Kholongchhu Hydro Electric Project in eastern Bhutan.
- The Kholongchhu project is one of four additional projects agreed in 2008, as a part of India’s commitment to help Bhutan to create a total 10,000 MW of installed capacity by 2020.
- The project is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025.
- Concession Period: The Government of India will provide, as a grant, the equity share of the Bhutanese DGPC in the JV Company. Once the project is commissioned, the JV partners will run it for 30 years, called the concession period, after which the full ownership will transfer to the Bhutan government, which will receive power from the project as a royalty.
NATIONAL DOCTOR’S DAY: July 1st
- In India, the National Doctors’ Day is celebrated on July 1 all across India to honour the legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.
- He was born on July 1, 1882 and died on the same date in 1962, aged 80 years.
- Dr Roy was honoured with the country’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961.
- In his memory, the West Bengal government has announced a state holiday on July 1, urging the central government to announce it a national holiday.
Uttar Pradesh mulling over proposal to turn Shivalik forest into tiger reserve
- The proposal to declare Shivalik forest in western Uttar Pradesh as a tiger reserve is gaining support among officials, experts and wildlife enthusiasts.
- Spread over 33,200 hectares, the forest is located at the foothills of the Shivalik range close to the Rajaji National Park in Uttarakhand on the route to Dehradun from Delhi in the Saharanpur circle.
- Once the proposal is officially accepted, it would be the fourth tiger reserve of UP and the second one in western UP.
- Amangarh in Bijnor district is western UP’s first tiger reserve near Jim Corbett National Park. Dushwa and Pilibhit are the other tiger reserves in the state.

Kritika Pandey awarded Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2020
- The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is awarded annually for the best piece of unpublished short fiction (2,000 to 5,000 words). The prize is open to Commonwealth citizens aged 18 and over.
- The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is managed by Commonwealth Writers, the cultural initiative of the Commonwealth Foundation, which was set up in 2012 to inspire, develop and connect writers and storytellers across the Commonwealth.
- Kritika Pandey, daughter of Ranchi, Jharkhand, has been awarded the Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2020 for the Asia Region.
- Her title “The Great Indian Tee and Snakes” got the price.
Dream Kerala Project for rehabilitation of expats
- Kerala will soon roll out the Dream Kerala Project aimed at the rehabilitation of repatriated expatriates and the integral development of the state.
- The project is implemented in collaboration with various government departments. Public will be given a chance to submit proposals and suggestions regarding the future plans for the state.
- The implementation of the projects will be entrusted to a committee under former Chief Secretary KM Abraham.
Indra Mani Pandey appointed India’s Permanent Representative to UN
- Seasoned diplomat Indra Mani Pandey has been appointed as India’s next Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva.
- Pandey, a 1990-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is currently serving as an additional secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
- Pandey succeeds Rajiv K Chander in Geneva.
Former RBI Governor C Rangarajan conferred with 1st P C Mahalanobis Award
- Former Reserve Bank of India governor, Chakravarthi Rangarajan has been conferred with the first Prof. P C Mahalanobis Award in Official Statistics for lifetime achievements.
- He received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution in providing solutions in the issues related to the estimation of national income.
- The award has been instituted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) from 2020, and will henceforth be awarded annually for the outstanding and meritorious contribution of an individual for the development and promotion of official statistics.
India and Japan conduct PASSEX naval exercise in Indian Ocean Region
- The Indian and Japanese navies conducted a small exercise PASSEX (passing exercise), towards the Malacca Strait in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
- Participants: The exercise consisted of four warships viz. Rajput-class destroyer INS (Indian Naval Ship) Rana and Kora-class missile corvette INS Kulish of Indian Navy and JS Kashima (TV 3508) and JS Shimayuki (TV 3513) of JMSDF’s training squadron.
- This was the 15th exercise undertaken by the navies of these two nations in the last three years.
Ravindra Jadeja rated India’s most valuable Test player in 21st century by Wisden
- Flamboyant all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been named as India’s most valuable Test player in the 21st century by the Wisden magazine.
- With an MVP rating of 97.3, the 31-year-old Jadeja was also rated as the second-most valuable Test player worldwide, behind Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralitharan.
- Wisden Cricket Monthly (WCM) is a UK-based print and digital cricket magazine available to buy worldwide.
Madhya Pradesh police have started a helpline service
- Madhya Pradesh police have started a helpline service with the objective of controlling incidents of increased suicides.
- The purpose of this helpline service is to help the aggrieved person in any way. – The helpline service started by Betul district police has been named Aas-Pas means around so that a distressed, disturbed, or depressed person does not feel lonely.
- The special feature of this campaign is that the information about the person who takes the helpline services will be kept completely confidential.
Vladimir Putin to remain Russian President till 2036
- The president of Russia, officially the president of the Russian Federation is the head of state and de jure head of government of the Russian Federation, as well as the commander-in-chief of the Russian Armed Forces. It is the highest office in Russia.
- Vladimir Putin has recorded a victory in Presidential polls. With a victory, he is set to stay in power until the middle of the next decade i.e. until 2036.
- Russians went to the polls on 1 July 2020 to cast ballots in a nationwide referendum on Constitutional Amendments.
